I really want help with my Sciatica

I'll try and make this quick.

I've had some sort of sciatica down my leg for coming up on two years now. I strongly believe that this sciatica was caused from the sumo deadlifts I was doing at the time. I have continued to deadlift but instead conventionally since then and it has not aggravated the condition at all. I've gone to chiropractors, doctors, pts, none of them can give helpful advice probably because they can't understand what's going on. I doubt that it's a herniated disc because I have full strength in that leg. I also believe this because I have no pain in my back in just starts in my buttock and goes down my leg.

Not sure if I posted this in the right board but I thought back problems seemed like the most appropriate. If any additional information is needed I'll provide it. I really want someones help this has wreaked havoc on my life giving me insomnia which lead to a whole deal of other problems. If someone helps me I'd be more than grateful and willing to compensate if need be.

My husband found an orthopedic doctor who gave him a steroid trigger point injection in his back..it completely stopped the pain for over a year. When it started to wear off, he started using an inversion table- he says it is helping allot..

Maybe talk to an ortho about steroids to see if they help?

Sciatic pain or sciatic type pain is a result of something pressing on the sciatic nerve itself, or, more likely, one of the spinal nerves that the sciatic nerve connects to. That "something" can be tissue like a herniated disc, or tissue that is inflamed from a strain or sprain, etc.

Have you had a MRI? This could rule out a disc problem. If the sciatic pain lingers I would suggest a visit to a spine specialist...this could be either a fellowship-trained orthopedic spine or neuro surgeon, for an accurate diagnosis and plan for treatment.

Very often the first line of treatment is a course of physical therapy and a series of epidural steroid injections that are given to reduce inflammation and for pain.

I lived with sciatic pain for a number of years before having surgery to take the pressure off the nerve/nerves. My nerve compression was caused by narrowing of the central canal which put pressure on the bundle of nerves known as the cauda equina.

There are many causes for sciatic pain. Sometimes it can be difficult to resolve the pain until you can figure out the cause of it.

Re: I really want help with my Sciatica

    Dear TheLingerer,

There are specific stretches that work very well, that we can do to release pressure off the sciatic nerve. Just search for the words sciatic nerve release. One great sciatic nerve stretch is to stand straight facing a wall, put both hands on the wall, and bending one knee, keeping the back straight, lean forward to do gentle but firm stretches. Change legs. Keep the hips, head and neck straight.

A MRI is OK to get for your mental comfort, but you know there is no broken bone. That expense is completely not necessary. Medical doctors do not prescribe a massage and stretches. They will only state 'nothing is wrong'. Their whole purpose is to prescribe medication and surgical procedures.

Chiropractors can be useful if bones are out of place. But that is not the issue with the pinched sciatic nerve. The nerve is positioned within buttock muscle. When those muscles are too tight, they pinch the nerve. We can learn to release it ourselves. I know because I suffer sciatic nerve pain due to different leg bone lengths from a serious accident many years ago. I regularly have to pay attention to keeping the nerve released. Once those muscles get too tight they keep on pinching the sciatic nerve. Recently someone I know had to deal with the same issue from daily sitting in a chair at work.

It is not about how fit we are. It is about the buttock muscles pinching the nerve.
