medx machine

i recently suffered an injury at work, had lower lumbar surgery at L3/L4, after ,6 weeks post op, my surgeon put me in therapy, and the medx machine,i had my sciatic nerve pinched, so severe that i couldnt hardly walk on the left leg, my shin had extreme pain, left buttocks, knee, and ankle, i had a second mri, after 5 weeks because i was still having alot of pain in leg and at the incision sight, after 3 sessions on this machine, it made my incision sight worse, inflamed, the second mri showed what the radiologist suggested was bone fragments, dr said he wasnt buying it, thought it was scar tissue,im not sure if maybe he started me out at to many pounds or what but after the 3rd session i could barely get up the steps in my house, now hes recommending a second opinion, witch im all for,ive lost half my muscle mass in my left thigh, i feel like he should of focused, on building some strength in my leg before getting me on this machine, thats my opinion

Re: medx machine

Dear wjj,

Just saw your message.

Due to the many mistakes in judgement that doctors have made with my own many medical cases, I suggest that you request a second opinion OUTSIDE OF THAT MEDICAL GROUP, simply because doctors within a group always support each other. Which makes sense, but doctors are not God that they are always right. I don't know your location, but in America, insurance companies must honor and pay for that request. You likely will need to state the name and address and phone number of who you want to see. You also must request a copy of the MRI or request to take yours to the new doctor.

So you need to first do your due diligence in finding a great back specialist. You can use Yelp and check for best Spine (or whatever) doctor and then read what patients have to say. That's how I find great doctors.

Scar tissue can be very difficult to identify, at best. Did the MRI use the new gadolinium-based probe? Usually a biopsy is required to know if it is indeed scar tissue. To just assume would be inappropriate, and if you have bone chips that can do severe or permanent damage.

Re: medx machine

ya ya girl,
thanks for the input, its been nothing short of a nightmare for me, since this is a workmans comp case, its very difficult to get a second opinion, but that being said, the dr is recommending a second opinion, witch im all for, i will be going to the University Of Iowa if its approved, these surgeons act like they never make mistakes, made me feel stupid, i know my body, and i know what im feeling is not soreness from my therapy,

Re: medx machine

Dear wjj62341,

The injury itself is a nightmare. I am so sorry you have to go through this!
Even in Workman's comp cases we have every right to outside opinion from the doctor of our own choice. In fact it is said to never accept the workman comp medical professional opinions without seeing your own doctors. They work for the business owners, not for you. The job attorneys do try to control every detail, but there are laws protecting you. You may want to consult your own attorney. Or at least look in to it. I think that most if not all injury attorneys will give one free consultation.

I slipped and fell on a wet floor in a store and broke my wrist and had to get an attorney as the store owner flatly denied responsibility. It cost me nothing because the attorney and the doctors worked based on winning the lawsuit, which I did win. All of that said, yes, physical therapy is always painful for awhile and can feel like torture. Regardless, you have every right to go at your own pace, and to know that the professionals involved with your care are doing the best thing for you and why they are doing it. Let me know how you are doing.

Re: medx machine

Welcome to the board. What type of surgery did you have? Was it a discectomy or a fusion?

I wasnít that clear on whether the sciatic pain occurred prior to surgery or was a result of the post surgical physical therapy.

It sounds like you were treated much too aggressively in rehab...particularly just six weeks post surgery. I know different spine surgeons have different opinions on post surgical physical therapy. Some donít even send their patients believing it can cause more harm than good.

Are you still using that machine?

Re: medx machine

teteri66,

my diagnosis was extraforaminal disc herniation.
surgery was called hemilaminectomy & partial facetectomy microdisectomy, excuse the spelling, just went off dr spelling, and no im not on the machine, after 3 times i had had enough, its been a week since i was on it, and i can hardly walk without pain in the incision area, its inflamed, he took me completely off therapy, i agree he was way to aggressive, started me out at like 60lbs at 30 reps, and i was literally down to one leg when i started this machine due to all the muscle loss, it was 2 month wait before i even got the surgery, so i was hobbling on the left leg long before i went under the knife,

Re: medx machine

And when did you have the new MRI? Is it possible the disc has herniated again? Are your symptoms worse than prior to surgery?

Also, am I correct there was a two month period between the herniation and surgery?

Re: medx machine

We are always entitled to second and third opinions outside of a medical group, and we need to listen to our own good judgement as well.

Please let us know what happens.

Re: medx machine

Dear wjj,

Of course, I am not glad about your injury, but I am very glad for you that you now have the facts and it can be taken care of appropriately, with a surgeon of your own choice. Ask your attorney to get you the best they can find. And take as long as you need to recover.

It is so disgusting that is the norm of how Comp doctors behave!
Let us know how you are progressing.

Hugs,
