Question smoking and fusion???

Has anyone had a successful fusion while smoking? My mom is in need of a fusion and surgeon will not perform if she smokes. I don't think she will quit.
Would love some true life experiences.
Good Health to all

Re: smoking and fusion???

Well My Doctor Said He Would Do It Either Way, He Said He Hasnt Really Seen Where Does More Harm Or Not, Almost Any Doctor Will Say Stop Smoking, Thats Their What The Other Person Said They Did Would Probably Work For Ya, Stop The Day Of Or Before And Sart Up Again After.. I Smoked But Workmens Comp Wouldnt Approve My Surgery Till I Stopped, So I Stopped Cold Turkey. My Surgery Is Jan 8th.

Re: smoking and fusion???

I hate to be the dissenter here, but I have heard PLENTY and read PLENTY about how smoking hinders bone healing (in this case, fusion!).

I know how hard it must be to quit...and those of you who replied that you healed just fine..I'm guessing you guys are the lucky ones! I've heard much more about how fusion failed or took way over a year (maybe even 2!) to fuse b/c of smoking.

(No, I don't smoke)...<--so if you want, you can throw my opinion out

Keepin the faith,

Re: smoking and fusion???

To all,
Use to smoke. Quit COLD TURKEY prior to last fusion and scheduled for second fusion next week. I am glad I didn't go back to smoking. Is there anything positive to say about SMOKING?
Good luck to all of you who are trying to quit. It can be done.
