    Success percentage rate of Fusion

What percentage of success rate did the surgeon estimate for your fusion prior to surgery?

My dr. is now giving me a 70% success rate. Is that good? That is up from 50% he gave me a few years ago. This is for L-5-S-1

I know it's hard to give a "success rate" of a fusion, but it helps to get an idea.

My doctor estimated a 90% success rate for me and my surgery. Then again, as we've all heard and read, the definition of "success" is pretty broad.

Can you tell us if you have gotten 90% of success indeed after surgery?

Cool Re: Success percentage rate of Fusion

Hmmmmmm? My Doc didn't give me a %! He just said you'll be able to do anything you want once you've fused! He said I'd be playing golf in a year! (Wrong) I don't golf......Hate the game!
I had L-4/L-5 Fusion in Oct. 2001.......I feel great! I am careful what I do only because I never want back problems again!
I'd say I'm 99%........& planning on staying that way!

Way to early for me to tell yet! I'm almost 5 weeks post-op, feel very good (sore at incision sites) and seem to improve noticeably every 4 or 5 days (staying the same in between). So far, so good. My buttock and leg sciatica pain is gone, hopefully to remain that way.

Acme: sounds great. My doc told me there's a 80% chance of improvement w/ fusion (L5-S1). However, what I'd really like to know from anybody w/ fusion experience--how long did it take the sciatic pain to go away? I had a fusion on L5-S1 on March 10th, 2004 due to ddd and sciatic pain for 14 months. I'm a bit discouraged at this point as the sciatic pain seems about the same as before the surgery. I'm up walking around OK, but sitting is becoming a problem (again!). Any words of encouagement out there?

Re: Success percentage rate of Fusion

    G'day,
My surgeon gave me 75% chance of success, but success for everyone is so different. For example i was told by my NS, success for me is to have the pain reduced and for me to be able to become at least a little bit active. not to do away will all the pain, that is impossible. Everyone has a different spine condition going into the theatre. Im almost 3 months post op and in my mind im a success, obviously its too early to call as i havent had an xray yet but my pain has reduced a lot.

Re: Success percentage rate of Fusion

    10codeman,
It was less than a year for the Fusion to completly fuse. I had some sharp shooting/ needle like pains where I had the incision. Nerves & muscles take a while to reconnect! If sitting was a problem I'd stand then sit.......and bend .......& twist while sitting. Pt did nothing for me! It actually hurt me & my Doc made me stop! But.........Man did I walk & walk & walk!! That in my book is what gave my back strength !(and controlling my weight)
Everyone heals at a different pace. Be patient!! Time is your friend after Fusion.....

Re: Success percentage rate of Fusion

Acme/Larry Thanks for your reply. I started my swimming pool workout today and it felt pretty good. I'll just have to remember to be patient. I felt much better after I had a microdiscectomy in 1995--that was a piece of cake compared to this surgery! 10codeman
