Lightbulb How To Prevent Scar Tissue?

    Hello everyone,

I will be having my L5-S1 Fusion Tommorrow, I know it will go well!!!

I was just wondering how to prevent scar tissue from building up? I would hate to have scar tissue come back to bight me and cause another surgery.

I heard Pt and walking helps.

I have also heard that they do ultrasounds to break up scar tissue on other areas of the body. However, I have never heard of that being done on the back.

Please post your suggestions and if everyone could ask their doctors for their advice during your next visit and come back and post it.

I have heard alot of people have scar tissue issues, I want to prevent it!

Thanks again for everyones advice and support! It really has helped!

    Take care,

PS: Talk to everyone in a week or so........................

[COLOR=DarkRed][SIZE=3][FONT=Palatino Linotype]I don't think you can stop the formation of scar tissue, but you CAN keep it from getting tight which is what causes a lot of pain and problems. My doctors have always recommended walking as the very best way to keep your scar tissue "stretched". I know, before my last surgery, it worked well for me.

I want to wish you lots of luck tomorrow. Take good care of yourself, follow orders, and get well. We want you to be a success story!

My PT said that PT after surgery can prevent scar tissue. What does your doctor recommend?

Re: How To Prevent Scar Tissue?

    Hey There,

I believe that if you gently rub the scar each day, this will prevent the scar tissue adhereing to the spinal muscles (and thus causing you further pain). You can do this even when you are applying your vitamin E oil to the scar.

Vitamin E pure oil should be rubbed into the scar twice a day for the first 3 months as this is the time when the scar reforms and the time it will take for the scar to eventually gain a 'permanent' look. So as you rub the oil in, gently massage the scar in small circular motions, this will prevent the scar tissue from adhereing.

    Good Luck
