Unhappy Neurontin driving anyone else CRAZY???

hey guys,

I have just started taking Neurontin for leg pain after TLIF surgery. It is literally driving me crazy! I can't sleep because I am twitching so bad and when I close my eyes, I see all sorts of crazy things. I am also clinching my teeth horribly. Has anyone else had an experience like this with Neurontin???? Please let me know. The only catch is I don't have pain in my leg anymore. How ironic! Anyway, thanks for any input!

Take Care,

Heelsgal

Are you absolutely sure that this is being caused by the neurontin?I have never heard of this type of reaction before to just starting the neurontin, but i guess anything is possible.everyone reacts in there own unique way to meds.you may have some type of a sensitivity to the med or if you are taking other meds,it could also be some sort of drug interaction.I would definitely call your doc and see him to duscuss alternatives to the neurontin.Have you called your pharmacy and related this reaction to them?Whenever i have any questions regarding Rx meds, i always ask my pharmacist first as they know so much more about the rx meds than the docs do.But i would call today and tell your doc what is going on.He may want you to taper off immediately. You cannot just stop neurontin suddenly.it must be tapered onto and off of or you run the risk of having a siezure.hope you find the answers soon.keep me posted. Hello,

I could not touch neurontin after I reserched it. I just told my doc I took it and it didn't work. I heard it does make you nuts...

I know you will go through alot of body/mental changes the first few weeks of taking it.

I wish you the best!

Take Care,

TAZ

I took Neurontin when my sciatica first got bad. It did nothing for me but made me sleepy. Have you ever considered that the pain is now gone because your surgery is successful?

I grind my teeth all the time; I don't think it is related to a drug. BUT, the poster who suggested chatting with your pharmacist had a great idea -- they really do know a great deal about meds and will usually take the time to chat with you about them.

Neurontin and I were not meant to be. It was increased to 1200 daily and at that level I became disoriented. I was at the dr office for a pre-surgical check up when they said I needed to have more blood work. So the nurse walked me down the hallway and I asked when they had built on to the office and she looked at me like i was crazy. She said, this is the hallway you came in on. Well, the dr decided to take me off of it since I was confused at home too. It never did anything for the pain but I cac say at least I tried it.

Meds react so differently with all of us. I have heard many stories that show it can and does work for some.

Good luck to you.

Beth

I take 3600mg a day and the worse side effect that I have is weight gain. It makes me a little tired but not that bad. It gave me panic attacks too which is annoying.

I'm going to look to something different when I go back to the pain clinic.

Hello Hellsgal, This is really a question for anyone who knows anything about Neurontin. I've heard that it was never intended to be used for pain but was originally used for brain seisures. The company that makes it, Phizer, is now in a lawsuit because of this. I dont' know if I've spelled the drug company's name right but anyway you probably know who I mean. I'm really concerned about this because my doctor has had me on it for the last 4 months ever since my surgery.
I'm so sorry you are having so much trouble sleeping at night. I know I could not sleep at night with out the Zanax prescribed to me. It's really important for me to get that good sleep at night because then I feel better in the morning although the pain does return as the day progresses. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Hope you get some relief.
Toelle

Been on 900 mg a day for a year and a half now for diabetic neuropathy. It has helped. Only side effect I really noticed originally was it made me sleepy. It took a few months but I got over that. Since then I have had no problems. But my dose is very low.

Aloha all,

I thought I would put my two cents in. I have been taking Neurontin for about 1 year now, for me it has done a reasonable job of controlling my leg pain. I started out with a low dosage, but am now taking 1600mg a day. After my surgery, my right leg radicular pain was completely eliminated, however, I developed some nerve pain in my upper left leg and buttock. This was when my doctor increased my dosage to 1600mg from 1200mg. This eliminated the pain on my left side, I am pleased with those results. But, I have noticed a little weight gain, an inability to concentrate, some mood changes, memory loss and anxiety/panic attacks as of late too. I don’t know which one to blame it on though, because I am also taking Oxycontin and Vicodin, both of which can cause the same problems. Oh the trade offs we have to go through.

BrokenOne, with all due respect…I would recommend getting a second opinion immediately regarding your dosage, 3600mg a day is the max dosage but is also extremely excessive…my research of this drug has shown that any benefit of using doses greater than 1800mg a day was not demonstrated, especially when used to treat pain, treating seizures is a different story though. Please don’t take offense it is just a suggestion.

What scares me the most is when the time comes to taper off of this drug, I hear it can cause some pretty uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms, especially for you BrokenOne, with such a high dose. Good Luck all.

Yeah I am concerned about the dose too. I do remember the pain doc saying I was on the max dose and I've been on it about 4 years now. The problem is that the Neurontin is not helping as much as it has been. It takes tramadol (100mg 3xday) to moderate the nerve pain and even that isn't totally controlling it. What kind of effects do you get coming off high doses of neurontin? I'd be interested. The mental effects of coming off of it I'm not so worried about. The pain is. I've went off the neurontin a few days at a time and the pain is unmanageable. Plus Pfizer kicks me the neurontin free of charge which is important as I have no drug coverage. I wish I had never started taking the stuff to be honest. With the weight gain and side effects if I had to do over I'd go on the street and start shooting smack. Never see a fat heroin addict. Well, maybe not but you can understand the sentiment.

Be very cautious about how you taper off Neurontin. My brother had a bad experience when he tried to stop, even though he did it over several weeks. In fact we were both taking it for nerve pain & felt that it was causing depression. I will not take it again. Be careful.

Re: Neurontin driving anyone else CRAZY???

I have been taking Neurintin for about two years. One neurosurgeoun, one orthopedic surgeon and a rehab specialist all prescribed it. There seems to be general acceptance by the Docs that neurontin is helpful to repair nerve damage.
The most noticeable problem I have had in memory difficulties. I think that's what it was. I don't remember for sure.
Seriouly though, I have been taking singing classes for kicks and was struggling far beyond my past exxperiences to memorize my lyrics and wondering what was going on. Then, I learned that this is a side effect of neurontin.
I have tried several Rx's in the anti-siezue class that would have substituted for the neurontin but reacted poorly to all of them.
Good luck to you.
