Unhappy Update on Swollen Feet

Hello Everyone,

Recently, my doctor's office called me concerning results of my blood work testing. I was so worried because they are worried about me developing Type ll Diabetes as I already have been diagnosed with high glucose. Well, my blood sugars came back OK but they found that I have anemia. This has really worried me. Prior to surgery my surgeon had almost canceled it because of a low blood count. He asked me if I had anemia and I said no. He then thought that my count was low because of donating my blood only 8 days ago. Then on top of that I had started menstruating during pre op testing. My surgeon did not have to use my donation during surgery. But after I still had a low blood count. Then four days after surgery would you believe that I started to menstruate again. I called my surgeon at 5 days post op and he told me to start taking iron tablets. I did purchase iron tablets and took them for about 4 weeks. My primary doctor's office told me not to take anything until they do more blood work on me. I have an appointment on Tuesday.

As most of you know since I have been doing so much complaining, I have very swollen feet. It has now traveled completely up both my legs to my knees. The stiffness is unbearable and my legs feel like rubber bands. I have so much pain in them. I haven't called my surgeon's office because I thought things would get better. However, they did call me to cancel my appointment on the 12 and reschedule to the 16. What's four more days at this point? I was starting to wonder if my swellings are related to anemia. So I called my sister who is a MA and works in a doctor's office. She talked to her doctor's and they told her that indeed these are symptoms of iron deficiency anemia. He then asked her if I had a pica. She told him OMG yes. I have been eating at least 10 cups of crushed ice a day since my surgery. I thought it was a very unusual craving. I actually craved ice over my coffee. Also my daughter had noticed a few days ago that I started to get these white spots on my neck. My sister checked me and found they are also starting on my arm. She told her boss this and he said this is also from the anemia and that I better get to my doctor soon. I have been very tired but I thought that was because of all these pain meds and I really don't get much sleep with these painful nights. I am told this is another symptom of iron deficiency anemia.

Yes, I realize this is the back boards, but I had to post this in case some of my symptoms may not be from my fusion surgery. Although it all began close to surgery date. Looks as if I have to start researching anemia as I know very little about this. Sorry so long....

Hi Tomarrow. Wow, what a story! Would anemia be a good diagnosis? Isn't it easily treated? I don't know much about it. Anyway, good luck and keep us posted. Are you still taking your iron? ~Daubie

1/19/04 I am 7 mos post op. I still have the same foot pain as before surgery. Doc agrees it is probably permanent nerve damage. Started neurontin this week. Still glad I had the surgery though!

Hello Everyone,

Today when I woke up my feet were even more swollen. I called my primary doctor around noon and he told me to go to the ER. I really dreaded going but things were getting worse. When the triage nurse seen my feet she immediately brought me in. The doctor ordered an ultra sound of both legs. I told him that he was wasting his time as I really doubt that I would get blood clots in both legs. He explained that he had to rule it out. He then ordered blood work and a urinalysis. Of course my blood work came back saying that I had anemia. Their were a few others that were high and low. He then wanted me to stay longer and lie on the stretcher and elevate my feet. I told him about my fusion surgery and that I could not lie down and raise my feet. However, I told him that I could do this in a sitting position. He did not understand why I wouldn't lie in the stretcher. He also told me that anemia would not cause this to happen to my legs and feet. He said that my surgery with nerves and muscles would not make my feet and legs as swollen as they were. He did discharge me, but said that is was imperative that I see my doctor on Monday. He also gave me copies of all the blood work results. He said my doctor will need to order an echo cardiogram. I told him that I already have a script from my doctor to get one to check on my heart murmur. I just haven't made the appointment yet.

What a wasted day... And I am back to square one...

Hello Daubie,

Well, I was hoping that anemia would have been the cause of my swollen legs and feet. I just want an answer. It is so hard to get one when the doctor's all learn from the same books but see things differently.

My primary doctor told me not to take any iron until they finish up with all the blood work.

How have you bee feeling? I hope that you are having some relief with your foot pain.

Take Care.

OMG, I wish I was magical, so I could fix each and one of us. Tomorrow, I will keep you in my prayers. When I read stories like this, I get mad at myself for being such a complainer. God needs to pay attention faster to cases like yours.

Please, let us know how you feel.

Hello VPG,

Thank you for posting your good advice. You have been a great help to me. The reflexology does help. My husband did it for me twice, but now everyone is afraid to touch me feet. They were ugly to begin with, but now they are doubled in size, along with my legs. Last night I noticed that I was also starting to swell above the knee and have lumps in the legs. Well, today I went to my primary. He is concerned with heart failure or a problem with a heart valve. My echo cardiogram is Friday. I do not think my heart is the cause but I will rule it out. They also put me on water pills and he said my feet and legs are the worst he has ever seen. I guess my kidneys are really going to work hard now. Between wearing this brace and stimulator, it can be difficult in the ladies room. Then on top of that I got these stool tests to do at home.....gross... They also did more blood work and have to find out for sure what type of anemia I have.

I still went to the drug store and got my own scripts afterwards. I think that I will have to stop wearing my Capri's as I actually seen customers staring at my legs and not in a good way......lol I will stay strong no matter what it takes.

How have you been feeling? I hope that you were able to get your pain levels down some. Are you still cooped up in the house, under lawyer's orders? I will also be praying for you to, and thanks again.

Take Care

Hello Raiza,

Please by all means, don't let me do all the complaining all by myself......lol
WE all could use God's help, but I would first ask him to help all the ill children before he helped me.

I have faith that I will heal and get better, it's just a matter of time. I am sending extra prayers your way as none of us deserve to be in pain.

Take Care.

Hello Daubie,

Thanks for checking up on me. I really wish I had the answers. Maybe in a couple of days they will have the results of today's blood work.

So what are you making for dinner? I finally cooked a meal tonight, as I made stuffed peppers. My family loves them but I think their disgusting. Believe it or not I made myself peanut butter and jelly sandwich instead. Now it is feet up and rest.

Take Care.

Hi tomarrow. UMMMM, I love stuffed peppers! But I also love PB&J sandwiches! Unfortunately, neither is on my low carb diet! I made swordfish last nite. It was very good. Hope you're doing well today. I'm at lunch and gotta go have a smoke (I know, bad bad me!) before lunch is over. Take care! ~Daubie

Hello Everyone,

I went to my pain management appointment this morning. She had me leave my recent x-rays at the office because she wants my surgeon to read them before my next appointment. I gave her a copy of my blood work from the ER. I also told her that my primary doctor's office did more blood work yesterday. Well, she also ordered more blood work. No wonder I am anemic..lol She also is not sure what is going on with my legs and feet. She did put me back on Neurontin and Robaxin along with the ES Vicodin. I only take the Vicodin 3x a day and she told me I can increase it to 4 or 5x. I think I will stay were I am as I don't like all these meds. I realize that she is trying to make me more comfortable, but I am aware of what long term use of narcotic's can do. My next appointment is on Friday for the echo, but I don't think they will give me results as they have to go to my primary doctor.

Thank You everyone for listening to me. And I really hope that you all are getting some pain relief....

Hello Daubie,

It looks like I may also be looking to go on a diet. That is after they find out what's going on with me. I have noticed that since surgery I put on about 10 pounds. I realize this could be because of being a heck of a lot less active. Or maybe it could be water weight. It was really important for me not to put on weight after the fusion. I am really surprise that I did not loss any in the beginning as my husband and kids did all the cooking. The hardest part was eating it with a smile....lol I had to be grateful....

Take Care.
