    Sudden sciatica attack- what kind of treatment is best?

    After standing in line 1 1/2 hrs to early-vote on 10/26, that night I had a wowser of a sciatica attack in back of left hip - its like a baseball-size ball of pain, worst when I get up in the am - for a couple hrs I can't sit, stand, lie down - just kind of pace around. My ortho doc Rx a Medrol dose pack (steroid) which seems to be helping a little, once the pain on arising wears off, I feel pretty normal. He took Xrays too, and found my spine is generally a mess - spinal stenosis, subluxation in one vertebra, discs don't look good, etc. But I've had no symptoms before standing all that time. Am having a bone scan tomorrow. I'm 67, have arthritis most joints, but haven't had any back pain in 3 years! I swim 4-6 times a week, have done stretching exercises regularly, and still have full range of motion even with the pain - it wasn't one of those "grabbing" back attacks where you can't move atall. I just got a new mattress 6 mos ago, and it was fine until this happened. I can get to sleep ok, but if I have to get up in the middle of night to go BR, sometimes the pain starts up and I have to stay up then - I'm tired! Ironoically, I just had Synvisc in my very bad right knee in Sept. and it helped a lot - would really love to get my whole skeleton working right for a while. Any info or experience on what worked for your sciatica would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

    Don't know if this will help you or not but I think you should give it a try. I know it sure works for me when I have an attack of sciatica. My sister put me on to this because she has it really bad and this was all she could find that really helps her. First, use ice. put an ice bag on for 20 minutes then off for an hour then back on the ice for 20 minutes and so on. After you have started feeling better, you can start cutting back the time you spend icing, but you want to keep it up some because it helps to keep the inflamation down. Along with this do some stretching before you even try to get out of bed. One that seems to help the most for me is, point your toes down and hold there for a count of thirty, then pull your toes up and hold for a count of thirty. Repeat 5 or 6 times, or whatever is comfortable for you. Another one you can do is to pull your knee up to your chest, one at a time, and hold for a count of thirty, and again just do as many as you can. You can always increase the number of times you do this as you go along. This is not a cure for the problem, but it sure helps, but you have to be very consistant with it. I've gotten so that I just do it as part of my daily routine. Hope you give it a try. It takes some time, but the relief you get is worth it. Hope you start feeling better soon.
