The pharmaceutical companies are coming out with silver bullets. Bite on it during pain. This is almost all that's left. |

Don't take aleve.
I have had two fusions in the last three years.
After the last surgery, I discovered that two Aleves every day would really help with the inflammation. I took two a day for 18 months.
Three weeks ago I had emergency surgery because my colon had been perforated. I spent 15 days in the hospital and was off of solid food for 19 days. Three years ago I had a colonoscopy and my colon was in good shape.
The doctor told me that the Aleve caused me all of these colon problems.
The problem with Aleve and similar drugs is that they attack the Cox-1 enzymes and those are the enzymes that protect you GI system.
The Cox-2 only drugs, Celebrex and Viozz, were good because they attacked the cox-2 and left the cox-1 to protect the GI system.
Please heed my warning and do not take Aleve for more than 10 days.
I am facing more surgery in six weeks to remove my ostomy pouch.

People who have had fusions aren't suppose to take anything other than aceteminophen and aceteminophen based pain killers. NO Anti-inflammatories of any kind! They are to avoid these until they have fused entirely.

I waited until four months after my last fusion before taking anti-inflammation medication. The doctor approved the medication before I started.

Most surgeons will tell you not to take anti-inflammatories as they impede on the fusing process.

Just a small point here but Aleve is not being pulled. One study showed some increased risk for cardiovascular events( heart attack, stroke ect ). This was only one study and Aleve has been available for almost 10 years. As long as you follow your doctors directions, you should not worry. I just don't want anyone to have their Christmas ruled by fear and if you are in pain, don't be scared you will have a heart attack if you take an Aleve today. Merry Christmas to all and I appreciate the gift of support I have recieved from so many of you.

It's only a matter of time though. Pharmaceutical companies pull any drug at the first sign of trouble. The lawsuits aren't worth it.

I agree.
It may not be pulled yet, but they are working on it, same as Celebrex.
