Does L5/S1 Fusion affect L4/L5

Hi Guys,
I'm Fairly new here, But it seems there is not many questions that can't be answered on this board !
So here is mine : I have had a discectomy Laminectomy on L5/S1 in 2001
I again had a discectomy on L5/S1 in 2002
I've been in pain ever since and I have an appt with the Doc tomarrow. I have a feeling he is going to recomend a fusion. It is Far Advanced Degeneration (if I don't qualify for the ADR)

My problem is I have an Anular tear in L4/L5 and a bulge. It's not herniated yet and it's been like this for 2 years. If a fusion is done on L5/S1 will the stress put on L4/L5 make it rupture for sure ??
I will be sure to ask the Doc this, but I'm wondering if anyone delt with this before.
Thanks Dave

Re: Does L5/S1 Fusion affect L4/L5

When my orthopedic spine specialist did a laminectomy on me he insisted on doing a fusion. It was only going to be L4-S1 but when he got in there he saw cracks so he included L3. There will be more pressure on the next higher level.
