One Leg Colder Than The Other
My husband had fusion of L4, L5, & S1 in December. Since then, he has noticed one of his legs sometimes gets colder than the other one. Do you know what causes this?

Re: One Leg Colder Than The Other
I had a fusion in November at L4 L5 and my right leg had sensation in it like there is cold water hitting my leg or something. It is my inner chin area. Must be nerve related.

Re: One Leg Colder Than The Other
It isnt the sensation of one leg being colder, the leg actually feels colder than the other one. When you touch his leg, it is cooler than the other one.

Has he talked with his dr about this as it sounds like a circulation problem??

Re: One Leg Colder Than The Other
I had an L5-S1 fusion in May 2002. The surgery was successful, but I developed some numbness in my right leg, which I never had before surg.
I had to have a L4-L5 fusion in Feb. 2003. After that surgery my right foot had some numbness and was cold. I discussed it with my dr and he express surprise but offered no solutions. My foot was cold enough that I would cover it when relaxing in a chair in the evening. I was at my brothers home about a year ago and he had a digital thermometer that he used for his work. We aimed it and my left foot, then my right foot. My right foot was consistently a few degrees cooler that my left. The big toe on my right foot was 5 degrees cooler than my left foot. I was worried about circulation, but a few weeks later I visited my cardiologist for a routine exam. She checked the circulation in my feet and it was excellent in both feet. I then realized it had to be a nerve. About six months ago the problem started getting better. I have gotten about 90% better in the last six months. I don't know why it took so long, but I have hope that my cold foot will be completely gone in the future.
Good luck to you, I hope you get better too.

Re: One Leg Colder Than The Other
This really should be checked out. It could be either a nerve problem or a circulation problem. I suspect the latter since it is cool to the touch...something may be cutting off the blood supply to the leg and that wouldn't be good.

Good luck...please let us know what you find out.

Re: One Leg Colder Than The Other
Madonna, I had a fusion at L5 S1 in April 2002 and since then my left foot and lower leg has been cooler than the right. I am going to a specialist on the 4th and that is one of the questions I have on my list of things I need to know about. If you haven't got an answer by then, I will post and let you know what the specialist says about it.

Good Luck!!! Keep Smiling!!!!

Re: One Leg Colder Than The Other
def have him to go the dr. If circulation is compromised that can lead to other problems. The sooner he gets seen the better. Let us know how he fares-

Re: One Leg Colder Than The Other
Original poster here. My husband had fusion of L4, L5 & S1 on December 10, 2004 with instrumentation (erector set).

He went to the doctor yesterday and asked about one leg being cooler than the other. The doctor tested the pulse in each foot and said the circulation was normal, the same in both legs. He said it is a nerve problem and should correct itself during the healing process.

He is still having a lot of foot pain and back pain. The doctor said he has noticed a trend lately of people having pain longer than usual. My husband is taking oxy and loritab. The loritab wasnt working and the doctor had to give him a stronger loritab. He has been working part time for a month now and the doctor released him to work 4 to 8 hours per day as tolerated so he can eventually get back to full time. The doctor said some people take six months before they can go back to work.

We went and looked at cars the other day and my husband was getting in and out of several cars. One car was a SL500 that was beautiful. It is a low to the ground hot rod. Getting in and out of that car really irritated his back and it has been hurting ever since. Guess we wont get that one right now!
