Those "reachers" (I call mine a "grabber") can be bought at Walmart or at Walgreen's, etc., for $5 - $10. It's indispensable! Two years later I still keep mine handy to use for getting things I can't reach.

    Hi everyone,

Well getting nervous about tomorrow, but surgery is at 7:30 am so don't have to wait too long to get in. My daughter may post sometime after my surgery to let you all know how it went. (if she remembers, she'll be doing a lot of running here & there probably).

I'll get back online as soon as I can. Everyone take care, have a good holiday.

Blood pressure today - 150-80 so doc has me taking 1/2 a BP med. She also prescribed Elavil - it's an anti-depressant also used for insomnia. One good nights sleep in over 3 weeks is just not cutting it....no ill effects from the extra walk so far but I picked up some ben-gay today just in case...I'm doing 30 minutes and getting about 1.25 miles twice a day now. It's a sheet of ice around the house - it's driving me nuts not being able to get outside. I used to walk outside everyday as long as I don't have to wade through snow.... Okie I soooo envy you. KAT if you're still reading, we'll be thinking of you and be watching for your post-op post...

I have a suggestion for those of you that want to walk outside, but afraid of falling. My husband bought me a pair of treads that go on the bottom of my boots. They are rubber and attach to the front and back of the boot w/metal coils on the bottom. They should not be worn inside, but are so easy to put on. I am three weeks post op. and I can put them on by myself now.

Hope this helps. Good luck to all of you going in for surgery or post op.
    Happy holidays!

    Good Morning All,
Thanks for the post Judy, that should help Susiebird, I know I love my walks outside, it helps so much, just to be out of the house. Be careful about your BP Susiebird and I know even today I can't live without my Ben Gay.
Kat, We're thinking of you and know all will be good and can't wait for your posts.
Well, I've been doing so very good, but last couple of days I've been feeling really good but my stomach around anterior incision is getting very bad, in about all directions around it, I have VERY hard spots that really hurt to the touch, leaning against bathroom sink to brush teeth and such hurt alot My normal Dr. is out for medical reasons himself until Feb. and I have put in call to Surgeon's nurse but they haven't called back yet. My stomach is bigger than it's ever been, I've never had a big belly so it's very noticeable, hope it's nothing to worry about.
I walked 3 times yesterday, it was so beautiful about 76 degrees so couldn't help myself. Everyone have a great day, talk to you tomorrow

Thanks Judy, where did you get yours? I looked online but was hoping to find something in a store. It's supposed to be 40's for a few days so hopefully it'll melt off. Took the elavil before bed, slept ok, was up 2 times, but when I got up at 6 I had a blinger of a headache plus felt real sluggish - 2 cups of coffee didnt put a dent in it. I forced myself to get on the treadmill and felt ok once i started - got 1.4 miles in in 30 minutes. My incision is sore between the sweat and the brace rubbing; Okie hope yours is nothing to worry about. Everyone take care!

    FOHi Everyone,
I'm Kat's daughter and she asked me to let you know how her surgery went today 12/22. Her surgery lasted approx. 4 hours, and went very well. Her Dr. said 2 of her vertabrae had already started to fuse on their own, so he had to break them apart. The disc compression was more severe than was shown on the MRI. He said there were 6 nerves that were being pinched, so now with all the surgery complete the pressure on the nerves is no longer there. She is in good spirits so far.....I know, the drugs haven't worn off yet All of your advice and support has made her surgery a lot less scary for both of us. Thank You!!!!

    Good Morning,
Hope all could catch the post I copied from Kat's daughter, glad it went well.
SUSIEBIRD, that's what elavil did to me, I couldn't take it, it was given to me as a muscle relaxer, so I still have the full script and I went back to my Robaxin, I didn't have as many problems with it, and sleep is the main thing, I know what you mean about the brace, when it starts bugging you, you know it's almost time to get rid of it.
I walked a lot again yesterday, I can't believe we are having these beautiful warm days with no wind, we usually have to contend with the wind in the winter, but house is opened up all day and 76 degrees, I know it won't last.
Well I'm going to try to get by through the weekend then try to call someone about my stomach, it sure hurts today, will rest over weekend, Hubby is working and none of the kids can make it out from Ok., so will only have a little grandchild here for a short time Monday. So Merry Christmas Everyone, Have a safe and Happy Weekend

Hello all! Feel better today; after laying around ALL day yesterday. I found some info that the elavil may react with lortab - I took one yesterday AM about 4:30 - so I'm hoping that was the problem. I see that elavil is also used for nerve pain, and I have to admit I didn't take anything for pain yesterday, not even tylenol. Slept well last night, I woke up a few times but right back to sleep so got 8 hours. Took another nap already though and it's not even 10 AM....Go figure as I also got 1.5 miles on the treadmill already! Did 3 miles on the treadmill yesterday; I'm careful to warm up and cool down since I can't stretch my legs yet. My music helps me so much; santa is bringing me an MP3 player for Christmas so that'll be way cooler than stuffing my CD player behind the metal bar on my brace (altho it's nice to find another use for that darn thing....). I can't wait to hear from Kat. I hope we can help her through, just like y'all have helped me! Everyone have a great holiday; I'm sure it'll be a busy weekend for everyone.

    Merry Christmas EVERYONE
I had a fair day yesterday, it was 80 degrees here and no wind, and at 5 am when I woke up it was 50 degrees, so appears as if another beautiful day for Christmas. I still don't feel as good as I should because of my belly and a few muscle spasms but not too bad. We'll go for Sunday brunch at ANOTHER casino on Christmas, looking forward to being out with another couple just for the conversation.
Hope the elavil helps Susiebird, was not for me, but drugs affect people differently, and like you I love music but have always been afraid to wear the ear plugs for music, in case I can't hear a car, but listen in the house and car all the time. Hope you read post from Kat's daughter, and hope we hear from her soon, glad the surgery went well though.
Must get some things done. Christmas party for our shift at my Casino today Can't wait to see everyone. Talk to you later.
    MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL

    Merry Christmas to you too!
Had a fair night, woke up with nerve pain in my toes that kept me up for a while - haven't had that for a few weeks; the toes were cold yesterday so I'm taking that as a warning sign of what's to come. I stood quite a bit while wrapping presents so that probably didn't help. I took xs tylenol every 4 hours and robaxin 4x1/2 yesterday and probably today too. I forced myself to go a mile this morning on the treadmill and unless I start feeling better I'll skip the afternoon session. Offered to make a dish for supper at the daughter's tonite so I need to save my strength. Everyone take it easy over the weekend.....

    MERRY CHRISTMAS ALL
I remember the toes hurting, I'm sure it's the nerve pain starting in on you Susiebird, but shouldn't be too bad as you are very active and you learn when to go more slowly with excercise.

I got my Great Grand Daughter's gifts all wrapped yesterday, she's only one her,and wrapped
too long as well and got the paper cuts to prove it. So went for my 2nd walk, it again was beautiful, about 80 degrees and had to smile as I heard the music of the ice cream truck on Dec 24th, no where else but the desert, I do love it here. I had to cut our Christmas party short as my stomach was hurting, don't understand it at all, no problems anywhere anymore but there, how strange
Well have to get around to go to the Sunday Brunch at the Casino with friends today, sure glad Hubby isn't cooking this year, he deserves a break after taking care of me all year.
Well, Merry Christmas Everyone, Hope you pain is not too bad today

Hi all; hope everyone had a good holiday weekend. I felt pretty good even with all the travel, eating, and sitting. Last night I took the elavil with 1/2 robaxin and I did get a 4 hour stretch in but then up every hour. The toes were a little tingly yesterday and today but not painful; I got a cramp in my left calf on the treadmill yesterday; I cut back to one walk a day over the weekend and woke up feeling refreshed today More rain today and supposed to be in the 40's all week. Hopefully it'll melt the ice and I'll get outside again.....Have a good day all!

    Hi All,
Well we had anther 80 plus degrees day with no wind yesterday but I only walked twice, was too tired.
Watch those toes and cramps Susiebird, cutting back on treadmill is probably right thing to do for a few days.
Going out of town for a couple of days, ready for a trip, not to a DR trip either, a FUN trip. Will talk to all in a day or two.
    Be healthy and careful

Hi Susie & Okie, wanted to check in to see how everyone weathered the holidays. I had 10 here for dinner Christmas day, but hubby is a big help so it wasn't too bad. I'm up to 20 minutes on the treadmill & I think it's making a difference. I can't believe Susie can walk that far already. I got a late start though so hopefully I will catch up. I start back to work next week & I'm really nervous. I'm a graphic designer so that means sitting all day. My boss is very understanding so think I will start out with half days & work my way up. Glad to hear Kats surgery went well. Sounds like my surgery, nerve compression was a lot worse than expected, took 7 hours to clean up the mess. Hope to hear more from her soon. Take care everyone.
