Pain in back under left rib

Hi everyone. I have had this burning agonizing pain in my back, on my left side under my rib about mid way up the rib cage and in the middle of the rib. I don't know if I pulled a muscle somehow as I haven't lifted anything and just woke up one morning a week ago with this pain. Nothing helps this pain except pressure and I have used a moist heating pad, but it only seems to slightly alleviate the pain for as long as it is turned on. I don't have a history of back problems so I would be grateful if anyone has some insight as to what this could be. The pain is not getting better at all as the days go by. I will call the DR Monday, but in the meantime, any ideas?

Re: Pain in back under left rib

Hey....believe it or not I think I have the same problem. Unfortunately I have had this issue for about 5 years now. I am only 24. One morning I woke up with what felt like a pulled muscle or something in my back. It never stopped. At its worse it engulfs my entire back, but usually it is on the left side, right under my shoulder blade, focused just left of the spine. I have been through MRI's, Bone Scans, X-Rays, Spine Specialists, P.T., Chiro's and am currently treating it with pain meds. They have me on Skelaxin (a muscle relaxer), and Ultram(a synthetic pain killer) Unfortunatly, neither of these kill the pain, only make it managable. No one can figure out what the problem is, the only thing out of the ordinary is scoliosis, but the degree of the bend has been considered by all to be way to small for any corrective surgery. My doctor refuses stronger med's, and is currently launching a campaign to get me off my current meds, stating I cannot be on meds for the rest of my life. I am going along with this, but the bad news is that as my dosage goes down, of course, my pain is going up. I am addicted to my meds and I know this, but I have no other choice. Over the years, I have found constant stretching at home, pain meds, and most invaluable..a heating pad have helped the most, however there is never a day where the pain is not there. My stretching has loosened up everything, and now when I stretch, my spine, some ribs, and even my sternum "pop". Its disheartning. If your symptoms are the same as mine, you will be the only person I have ever met who has this as well. Let me know.

    Hey MOguy,

Sorry I haven't been on the boards in awhile, but my pain did go away. I do feel tinges of it every now and then and am hoping it does not come back. It was very painful. I have been going to a chiropractor (sp?) but honestly it does not feel like a bone out of place. It feels more like my lung or a muscle. It does not hurt though when I take a deep breath. Anyway, I will be checking the boards more often, so feel free to write back.

Re: Pain in back under left rib

I just wanted to add my 2 cents. I went to the dr today for the same problem. I have been having pain from right under my left shoulder blade down my back (basically, that whole muscle). I've been getting muscle spasms which started an hour after I did my morning stretches, none of which are strenuous. The dr told me to rest (obviously) and prescribed me a muscle relaxer (Skelaxin) and Vicoden for severe pain. I have been getting sharp shooting pains that take my breath away, hence the pain Rx to help me sleep.

I was told to put ice on it by the dr, but he didn't stress that. My dad, who was a soccer coach for 20 years, told me to alternate ice and heat, so thats what I've been trying to do. After taking the meds, I'm still in pain, but I just have to wait it out!

If anyone else has this problem, I think its up to you whether you want to go to the dr. I think it depends on how much pain you are in. I say, if you are in pain, go to the dr and although he can't cure you he can treat the symptoms. Muscle relaxers are really helpful because they'll stop the pulled muscle from getting stiff, which can cause pain and if I think can lead to it being pulled more.

Just wanted to share my story. Its simple, but just in case anyone has this happen to them and are unsure what to do.

Re: Pain in back under left rib

Just adding to the tally. This is exactly how my pain started and I found out I have moderate disc issues in my neck. C 5-6-7. My neurosurgeon says this is where the pain from those nerves, when encroached, radiates.
It sucks to say the least. I've had the stabbing, burning pain between the shoulder blades for almost 10 years now. I get by with klonopin and vicoprofen but it's just a band aid.
I had a little success with a cervical ESI and am having another one soon. You might try asking your doctors about neck issues.

    Best of luck
