Sacral injury,causes swelling, causes cellulitis!

If all we go through is not enough, my mildly swelled left leg has been somewhat under control. I am patiently waiting for a specialist. Now, let's add some infection. How can a closed injury to a swollen part of you body cause cellulitis? I understand that the nerves are not working properly in my leg, but the doc said the blood is "Pooling"! The swollen foot doubled in size in 2 days, it is tender, and now swollen halfway up my calf! I just picked up some antibiotics, but now I am scared. Is this related to my injury? or just out of the blue? I have no scratches, nothing breaking the surface. I read some pretty scary stories about this! LD

Well I scared myself into the ER last night, the cellulitis had gone just about to the knee. The doc said the leg would not have lasted another day. I was put on IV antibiotics, and more prescriptions. I was sent home with all that, and ordered back tomorrow. They do not keep anyone overnight anymore, which is fine with me. I think this may have put some urgency on getting my back fixed, seeing it was directly related to the compromised nerves. I am hoping anyway. Thank you Carol, LD

Re: Sacral injury, causes swelling, causes cellulitis!

By the time I got into the ER the swelling was just about to my knee cap. The ER doc put me on IV antibiotics, I was only there for three hours, but was sleeping most of the time. What he said, is that because I had Cellulitis 10 years before, the damage (small holes in the veins) allowed the blood to pool in my foot, and because my nerves are compromised, there was not enough pressure. The blood turned to it's own infection. I am on 2 heavy duty antibiotics for a week. I went home the same day. So, I think this adds to the list, I am going to a vascular surgeon to have my veins checked out, and having another CT. I have tried every time to tell my PA that I always have pain on the inside of my spine, and she says no! Now instead of a clean CT of the anterior, she wants me to drink barrium to check the colon, which will block the shot of the spine. I just had hemmarhoid surgery a month ago and everything is fine there. I have had some worries about this PA, I told her a week ago that I could cut the vicodin es in half because it doesn't do anything anymore. So, now she is wondering why I am not able to go out and do much, and that I would like a raise in some amount to my other pills. It is almost every day that I feel as bad as I did after the fall, that bone on bone grind, the ache and pinch in the butt and leg. Oops, sorry ramblin, Thanks!, LD

Hey LD: Just read your story and am so sorry to hear what you are going through. My hubby went through a similar problem with infection in his leg/foot and IV antibiotics a few years ago and I remember what a struggle it was for him. I am so glad to hear you went to the ER when you noticed the streaking up your leg. It was a very smart thing to do and, as you said, saved your leg. Just wanted to let you know someone out in cyberspace read your story and was thinking of you. Hope you're on the mend soon. Schragie

Re: Sacral injury, causes swelling, causes cellulitis!

Thank God that you got your self checked out. I had a fall a few years ago and scrapped my knee. The result was celulitis. My knee blew up because of the fall and it was X-rayed showing no breaks.

A week or so later the whole leg started to swell. Funny thing is a nurse in emerg told me I should just go home and put some antibiotic cream on it. Well I didn't take her advice and waited for the attending physician. He took one look and ordered an IV, I had to come back in the morning for an IV pump. Years ago you use to stay in hospital (Canada) but now they send you home on a pump and a nurse comes into the house daily. I was on the IV antibiotic pump for 3 weeks before it finally settled down. After three weeks I was put on oral antibiotics.

My celulitis was from a break in the skin where contaminants entered! I like you find the fact that you had no break in the skin unusual. Also you were on IV antibiotics for a very short period of time for it to resolve itself. Make sure that you are checked out for phlebitis. My mother had deep vein phlebitis and it did not show externally.

    Hope that you feel better.
