Alot Of Pain In Thigh Area 13 Weeks Post Op Plif Fusion L5 S1

Hello to all out there, Has anyone who has had Lumbar fusion still get the burning and pain in the middle of the nite when I lay flat it is so bad. I have to rub it constantly. And it feels like a bunch of spiders are knawing away at my thigh bone and muscles. Doctor has me on neurontin and lyrica and I am starting my aqua therapy for my fusion surgery which is 13 weeks post op. I did not experience this pain when I got home from the hospital so I was wondering if any one you had this happen? I dont believe this neurontin stuff is working, the only time I do get any relief is when I take it and one lyrica and one vicoden. I hate taking all this medicine but I find it if I dont the pain is worse. I am hopeful that the therapy will help. I see the pain mgt next week and my surgeon dosent see me for 3 more months, seems like after your 3rd month after surgery you are almost on your own. If things get worse for me I will see another orthopedic doctor that dosent rush you out of the room when he sees you have your pad and he knows you have questions. Really burns me up but I guess they expect all of their patients to come out with 95 percent pain free and thats what he told me before surgery.

I know from reading alot of these posts and doing my own extensive research on every aspect of the back stuff that no one comes out 100 percent pain free and if they did and they are on here please write me and let me know how and what you do. I know it takes time for all of this but I still have a gut feeling something just didnt go quite so right this time around but I will have to say at least I can walk, before it was so bad I was crawling around sometimes it was horrible!!! So maybe all this bad (especially nite time) pains in my outer and inner thigh is the nerve trying to heal, sure feels like a bunch of electrical shocks going on. I can hardly move my leg when this happens and EVERY nite it wakes me up, its horrible.

Well enough of me allready and how is everyone else and has anyone heard from Lori yet?

    Hi Msmona !
Sorry you too are still in pain. I'm 14 weeks post op from a fusion (TLIF). The first fews weeks I felt better then at about 4 wks post op the pain in my leg returned. The worst for me is in the morning and at bed time. I was taking Neurontin (1800 mg a day), Flexeril (muscle relaxer), and Vicodin. My doctor switched me to Lyrica (150 mg twice a day). It made me soooo sleepy. After a few days I got used to it. I does really seem to be helping. I'm still taking the Flexeril and Vicodin. However, some days nothing seems to help. Some nights all I can do is pace the floor, praying the pain will calm down long enough to fall asleep. no I've heard it takes up to a year for everything to heal.

I understand your frustration! One of the reasons I had this surgery was so I wouldn't have to take so much medication. I'm on more meds. now than before. I too have question did something not go right with the surgery but I have read soooo many stories on this board that sound just the same.

I started PT last week and WOW I'm soooo sore and the nerve pain is worse at times. Today is especially a rough day.

Good luck and I pray you get some relief.

Sorry you are having the pain. Talk to your doc, as my spine specialist told me to NOT lie flat in the bed for the first 6-9 months. Being flat for PT on the table was okay as I would not be in one position for long, but for sleeping he said I should do one of two positions. Either on my side with pillows between knees to keep the alignment if I really wanted to not be on my back, but his preference was as follows: that I sleep on my back with several pillows stacked below my butt and my legs supported by them, so that if I were to look at myself, I looked as though I was sitting in a chair. By having that position it aligned the spine but also took pressure off all the points.

It can be a bit awarkward doing the log roll the first time or two, but you get the hang of it quickly. It is very comfortable to have your legs on soft pillows and you forget how funny it must look. So comfortable that you are not likely to move about during the night.

Now, that is what he wanted me to do with each of my 3 level fusions. He didn't say the same for the 10 level fusion because the side was all I could stand. It took me more than a year to be able to stand lying on my back, even for PT. Too much hardware and with my asthma, it cut my air off. Made the aqua therapy even more inviting and the therapist found inventive ways to give me exercises where someone would normally be on their back.

Oh, forgot too, so came back. You might consider buying one of those large wedge foams pieces at the medical supply places. That way you can be on your back, but at a very slight incline like the PT tables can be positioned or as if you were in a hospital bed so it too can make things more comfortable. They run about $30 or less and come in at least 2 different thicknesses.

    Hope you are better soon.

Hey Mona -- so sorry to hear you are suffering. I am a little over 2 weeks post-op from a TLIF at L5/S1 and my leg pain has been steadily returning the past two days. I had a few burning spots in new places, like my ankle, and some cramps in the backs of my legs the first couple of weeks, but now it feels like the "old" leg pain has returned. Today in the shower, I tried to shave my calves and the feeling of the razor on them was even too much. I know they say its your nerves waking up, but I must say it is a little discouraging feeling like this after going through so much to feel better. It feels like a real step back. One thing I will say is that my lower back isn't hurting, but my pain was always worse in my legs. I am using Lidoderm patches on the really painful spots and taking Vicoden every two hours. My doc told me to lie on my back or sides only.

I am lying in bed but think I will try to take a walk later and walk it off. Somehow I don't think it will really help but I usually feel better when I walk so I will give it a shot. I go to the doc in about 10 days for my first checkup. If it's any worse tomorrow, I will be calling. I have a girlfriend stopping by today. She called yesterday to ask me if my back was all better yet. I told her to ask me again in a few months. Everyone thinks I am cured now but I still feel awful. Maybe to be really mean I will show her my incision!

I relate to the spider thing. At my worst, I felt like their were squirrels gnawing inside my legs. It is a horrible feeling, and a worse visual!

Feel better all and I haven't seen anything from Lorie. I hope she is okay.

Re: Alot Of Pain In Thigh Area 13 Weeks Post Op Plif Fusion L5 S1

I am 5 mo. post op I have had the nerve pain since the first fusion on 11-11-06, they went thru the front on 11-14-06, after they had finished the two I did feel better, but the nerve pain has come and gone in many different forms since then. I am on 1500 mg. neurontin, ES vicodin, 10 mg flexiril and two pamalor every night. I can so identify with your every word. I just had my check up the end of april, was told that it can take up to 18 months for this to be considered permanent. Although between the two surgeries I had the worst pain of my life, a 12 if I had to gauge it. That left and didn't come back so far, so anything I have now is welcome instead of that.

So it looks like we all have a long road ahead of us, unfortunatly. It seems like we can all agree that we are better than before the surgery and if I should have to live with this the way it is, I'm still better than I was.

I must say you seem to see alot of the nerve thing on here all of a sudden, strange that it just seemed to pop up here all at the same time, makes ya wonder!

I pray that we all have better day's ahead, I hope to hear that Lorie is ok too.

    Hi MSMONA,
I'm sorry to hear that you are in so much pain. I am 6 months out from a 2 level 360 and I have been pain free since I woke up from surgery. Prior to surgery I had the nerve pain, but I haven't had any since surgery. I started PT about 4 weeks ago and I must say I have a better ROM than before. I know I'm one of the few...but I am completely pain free since my surgery and have been off pain med since about the 2 month mark. I wish you all the best
