    What happen's after a Fusion doesn't fuse ?

What I am getting at is , do you have to fuse to be ok ? I'm at 6 months now with no sign of fusing , I have been having burning and feeling like my legs are pounding from my thigh to my feet. My CT doesn't mention anything about the fusion itself , the news of my fusion not healing came from a worker's comp doctor (orthopedic spine specialist ) this is really making me worry again. My surgeon told me I was healing slowly but healing , this is before I got the news from the w/c doctor . I'm going to take the report to my surgeon and ask why they would say that, I see him this Friday. Does anyone know where I could pic's or x-rays of a fusion that is healing ?
Thanks a bunch for your help.

    Hi Shawley-
Sorry about the news. I had a fusion L4-5 in March 2005 - My recovery was rocky and except for a brief period of bliss in the fall - I have had continuous pain and a loss of ability. I have done a huge amount of research, have studied my own xrays and MRIs and I still could not tell you what a good fusion would look like. I never found a single example on the web of an image of a fusion (either xray, c scan or MRI).
BTW - I had all of these diagnostics done at 12 months and the reports all said non-fusion but my surgeon wasn't convinced - said it was all inconclusive. I went for a 2nd opinion and that doc didn't think it there was any doubt AT ALL. NON-fusion. Interestingly, the hospital report says by looking at my xrays across time, it is clear that the bone fusion that was put down 'posterolateral' become resorbed and was nearly completely gone! But when I look at those xrays I can't tell from Adam what the difference is. Tricky stuff.
I can tell you that it is standard not to call it a non-union or failed fusion until 1 yr post-op. Don't know if any of this helps. Best of luck - Suzy-Q

    Shawley,

I like Suzy-Q can't tell what it looks like either, other than my Doc says so. My ct at 9 months indicated non-fusion and then again at 14 months. I have looked at the films, but I don't know what I'm looking for.

I had L4-5 fusion in Dec. 04, and about 7 months post-op starting experiencing bad pain from thighs to feet with the burning as well. My Doctor put me on Gabapentin and that has helped a great deal. I couldn't sleep the pain and burning was soooooo bad. My husband threatened to tie my feet together because I kept moving constantly. Pain is still there but not near as bad as before the med.

Now, I'm being told that I have a failed fusion. I am scared to death of going through that again but, I also know that if I have to, then I will.

Take care and good luck to you,
    Bernie

SuzyQ , & Tucsonlady40 , thanks for your input , I know nobody likes going through surgery and all that follows afterwords . Just when you think we're getting better ya get a slap across the face with somthing else , I just hope my doctor is up front about everything , I ask him before my 2nd surgery not to lead me on if somthing is wrong.
I'll keep my finger's crossed for now.
    Thanks again
