Question 7 wks post microdiscectomy - 2 popping sounds in back

Hi, has anyone experienced anything like what I'm about to describe. I'm 7 weeks post microdiscectomy on L5-S1. I haven't had any physical therapy and started back to work for 1/2 days on week 6. Everything had been going well, pain in my left leg was gone and back pain was gone but I was still very cautious in how I move.

Wed night I was sitting on the edge of the sofa petting the dog and got down on 1 knee to pet him again. When I got up to sit back down I heard 2 popping sounds and 2 quick jolts of pain in my back. Within 5 minutes I had some pain in my left leg. I'm afraid I've re-ruptured that disc.

The pain isn't that bad in my leg but it is definitely back. I have pain in my lower back and my side if I roll over in bed or sit the wrong way. I canít get an appt to see my surgeon until Thursday of next week and Iím going nuts trying to figure out what I might have done. I donít want to have to go through this process again, but Iím afraid that might be where Iím heading.

Any thoughts?

Re: 7 wks post microdiscectomy - 2 popping sounds in back

Hello,

On April 20, 2006 I had six screws, two bolts and plates to attach them all in my 3 lower lumbar vertebrae. I will be detailing more of what I have had done in a new thread hopefully giving some answers to others. Your question being so recent and hitting me hard because of my own experience with this "popping". First off, I suggest you take advantage of physical therapy for at least 4 visits with the goal of gaining the knowledge of doing these exercises at home. Let them know this and they will tailor a program for you.

This "popping" is a sign that your bones have not yet secured themselves to the replacements yet. It is a natural occurance and a warning that you should not extend yourself this much yet. Take the hints from your body and ease up on the movements that hurt. The PA's at your doctor's office know their jobs well. They will refer you to physical therapy as well. This method of combining different specialists for each problem works extremely well to address each person as efficiently as possible. One person could not possibly obtain all this knowledge and help as many people as possible without the others.

Pain killers are not the answer. Take them only when you cannot stand the pain any longer and as little as can ease the stress. Listen to your body and give it the time to heal. Get a note from your doctor limiting you from the activities that increase the pain. Follow your doctors advice to the letter and you will find success a lot sooner than you thought possible.

On another note. I have DDD and had three bolts put in my neck at c4 through c7 on September 21, 2006, (not even 3 weeks ago) and have had the same success so far.

Cindy

Re: 7 wks post microdiscectomy - 2 popping sounds in back

Its hard to say what those popping sounds are and you need to take real care until you get into the doc this coming week.

could be soft tissue popping, scar tissue or the fear.. you reherniated again. I had a fuison and have my sciatica return a few times through this and got real scared. My therapist said it was just a bump in the road.. to respect the pain, and then continue on gently and carefully. So far.. she's been right on Q!

So hopefully you will get good news it's just the soft tissue responding to the bend down.

Let us know how you are doing. Take Care. tammy
