Fonar MRI vs the laying down MRI

Hello everyone,

I am hoping that someone might be able to answer this question for me.
I have had 2 lower back surgeries and 1 cervical fusion. 14yrs ago for the
neck and 12 years ago for the lower back. I have developed severe DDD
in the spine and I have every symptom of another herniated disk in the cervical area just below the fusion. The problem is that the MRI does not show it only the arthritis that is present. A neighbor told me that she had the same problem with her lower back and finally had this new MRI done where you do not lay down and it clearly showed the herniation where the old way of the mri did not. Has anyone heard of this? If this is so does anyone know of a place in Chicago that offers this test? I appreciate any help that you can provide. The pain I am in is really bad and I would love to get some relief.
Thanks!
Debbie

Re: Fonar MRI vs the laying down MRI

Hi Debbie,
You've been through a lot! I'm sorry you're having more problems now, after all those years. I do hope you find some relief soon.

I've never had an MRI (CT scans and bone scans were sufficient for my problem) but I've read on the boards that different people have had standing, sitting, and bending MRI's. There are a couple of ways you could track down a facility that does one or more of those types: try the good ol' yellow pages under Magnetic Resonance Imaging, or call the major hospitals in the area and ask to be connected to the MRI center. If the first one doesn't have it, they may know who does. If not, don't give up. Just call the next one. Where did your neighbor have it done?

Good luck! Let us know how you're doing.

Blessings,
Emily

Re: Fonar MRI vs the laying down MRI

Thanks Emily,

I am going to do some investigating, hopefully I will get lucky and find out where they do them in IL. My neighbor had it done in FL, I guess it is done there all the time. Apparently they have found that it is a better way to see the spine in its natural position and be able to detect herniations and narrowing. Have a lovely day!

Re: Fonar MRI vs the laying down MRI

Well, I just did a search and found one in Elk Grove Village and Hazel Crest. Hopefully one of them is close or near to you. Hope this helps. Take care. Tammy

Re: Fonar MRI vs the laying down MRI

Hi

I had a sitting down MRI ordered by my neurosurgeon. He told me that this shows a better picture of what the spine does when it compresses. kdk
