question after surgery

Hi, I'm 23 and had my second microdiscectomy 9/13/06. Now, about 6 weeks post surgery I'm having pain that's starting to concern me. It started out fairly minor about 2 weeks ago, now the pain is very similar to before the surgery. It's not quite as severe as before, and unlike before the surgery, pain meds make it better. But it still bothers me that it hurts to walk without taking meds. It really hurts to sneeze too. Sneezing hurt before the surgery, but hurts worse ever since. After my first microdiscectomy years ago, i remember feeling almost perfect at 6 weeks. I'm in physical therapy right now, and started out very conservativly. Now my therapist wants to get more aggressive because he thinks my problems may be due to muscle weakness. Anyone have a similar experience after a microdiscectomy or laminectomy? I'm hoping someone has and went on to make a great recovery, but I guess I'd also like to know if I'm in a bad situation.

Thanks

Re: question after surgery

no, i've really just been taking it easy - like my dr. told me. i brought it up at my follow up appt. 2 weeks ago, and i was told that it was probably nerve inflamation and could take up to a year to go away, if ever. it's gotten worse since then though, and i don't know if starting therapy is what's aggrevating it or if somehow the disk herniated again and i didn't feel it right away. but from my experience, you feel it when a disk blows out.

Re: question after surgery

I had similar surgery a year ago. I still have the leg and sciatica pain. The only thing that relieves it a little is topamax. Its funny, when I had my first surgery they said the leg and hip pain would all go away. It was worse. I went to a different doctor, had a second surgery, this time with a spinal specialist, the doctor did what the first doctor did not, but that leg and hip pain is still there, not as bad but its there. The topamax helps. good luck
