    Repeat Microdiscectomy ?

    Hello,

20 months ago I had a back op on a herniated disc (Micro discectomy) and the results were fantastic. No more pain. I followed a course of Physio and my back was better than ever. However, 4 months ago I began with the same problems, intense pain in groin, left calf, left buttock and I await an MRI scan. The Arthopaedic consultant has said that he would NOT recommend a repeat OP but would prefer drugs to control the pain.

Is it worth pushing for a repeat OP on the NHS, should I get a loan and pay for a repeat OP, or should I use drugs for the next 40 years of my life ?

Anyone else had the same OP more than once ?

That's a tough call. It's very common for discs to reherniate. I think it's a matter of your lifestyle, if the meds would alter that, the impacts they would have on your system long term, etc. Those are all things to think about. Also a repeat micro may also fail as well, and they can only do so many and then a more invasive surgery would then be needed.

I think you should get a few more spine specialists opinions. And spine specialist, not a typical ortho. You just need to do some research to find out whether or not the surgeon you have in mind has a spine fellowship and deals directly with spines or at least majorily with them.

Good luck. Sorry to hear you reherniated again. Tammy

Hi Jed.... well, you still dont know for sure that you reherniated... A co-worker had a microD a year ago, and recently, started to complain of the same syptoms (pain down the leg, etc) as he had originally, and feared the worse. After seeing his doctor, they found that he had overworked himself and had torn or pulled his scar tissue that had gotten inflamed and is putting pressure on his nerve... So, it is possible that this has happened... If you have been really good about doing your excercises and stretches frequently and keep your core strong, then re-herniation is less likely, unless, of course, you really overdid it...

Now, if you did reherniate, I would ask the dr what the risks are if you DONT reoperate... For example, could there be permanent nerve damage if you leave it alone and cover up the pain with meds.. Also, what is the risk of a second op? Lastly, fusion may be necessary, which is a last resort, but I would consider that a better option than being on drugs for 40 years and end up getting a fusion anyway later on.. A friend had a fusion and he is doing super! Like it never happened..

    God BLess,

    Maurizio

    Thanks for replying.

I still await an MRI scan. It takes me 1 hour each morning to be in a position to walk (get up, lean against windowsill, walk for 30 secs, lean against windowsill, toilet, lean against windowsill, quick walk........). Evenetually I can stand still long enough to clean my teeth and shave etc.

I am able to walk for 5 mins without pain, but then it kicks in with a vengence and I need to sit down. Not good for someone who has run 2 marathons, cycled across the country and skied down Mont Blanc.

Incredible how soooo many people suffer this problem and yet noone really knows the best answer - drugs or OP ?

    Re: Repeat Microdiscectomy ?

Oh yes, can I ask another question ? I reckon someone out there will know these answers for my back research and might help me be 'logical'.

    (1) What are the names of the BACK OPS available eg
    Micro disectomy,
    laminectomy,
    fusion,
    disc replacement

    (2) What are the top 10 most used prescribed drugs for back problems eg
    Anti inflamitory (diclofenac)
    Diazipam (relaxant)

    (3) What percentage have back surgery and have complete success

    (4) What percentage have back surgery and have partial success

    (5) What percentage have back surgery with no success or worse

    (6) What percentage of people take drugs with complete 'pain free' success.

    (7) Drug options are :-
    pain free
    reduction of pain
    no difference after taking drugs
    new side effects

    (8) Surgery options are :-
total success - no more drugs
no difference in pain - same drugs as before
    worse pain - more drugs
death - no more drugs unless it continues in the afterlife, in which case i give in.

    (9) Non drug and surgery options are....?

    Re: Repeat Microdiscectomy ?

Like you I asked the same questions - and they are good questions. BUT there is no Set answer. Your Dr will tell you the same thing. Results very in everyone. Also the Dr will give you the text book statisitcs which may or may not answer your curiosity. I am persin who had 2 micro ds. I am still early on into the second one and dont know how well it worked yet. My advice is to search this forum and for key words in your questions and you will find a lot of usefull info. Also rememer most people posting are in pain so you may not get to many feel good stories.
