    Question Pars defect repair

I would appreciate anyones input on repair of pars defect...I have one where I also had an L4 L5 fusion..my doctor says that they will use rods and screws to stabilize it...I was told that where the bone part of your disc comes out you have two "bridges" of bone...mine formed like joints instead..How effective is the surgery..I was wondering if I should do it since the pain has become unbearable....Does it help at all or will I be stuck with my vicodin{I know that a lot of you are on stronger pain meds than I but I am stuck with it cause of my age and particular doctors.} Any help anyone can give would be greatly appreciated.

    Re: Pars defect repair

hi, i have pars defect also and to make a long story short I am getting a fusion on the the 9th. I didnt know I had until after a discectomy in july. Now I am in worse pain than before. They believe the pars is the root of my problems, I hope so because I hurt but am worried and scared about fusion surgery. I have read a little about just fixing the pars fractures but I dont think its that common.

you probably had it before surgery, most likely hapeens as a child or teen ager. Doesnt bother some people but can bother some people later in life.

also...fusion surgery...for me at least....was not that bad...my doctor went through my stomach and fused L4 and L5 with 4 large titanium screws...bigger around than your thumb...they were placed BETWEEN...the disc...a lot diffrent and a lot less recovery time...I was up in 4 days and back at my fast food job in 6 months...In 98 when I had mine done it was fairly new..but with how well it does I am suprised that tons of people are still getting the old fashioned fusions...hope your surgery turns out well and you get the sorely needed relief.

    Re: Pars defect repair

My back has always bothered me...I was always told as a kid that..."Your too young to have a back" anytime I complained of my back hurting...also my fusion had to be because of abuse at the hands of my adoptive father...kicking me in my lower back from age5 or 6 to age 9.

    Re: Pars defect repair

I have pars defect. The surgery that my Dr. wants to do is to put rods to stabilize the spine. I have bilateral so both sides are involved also he said he would do the level above to provide some additional support. I also had DDD and spondy. grade 2. I am in constant pain about a 5 with pain meds. My Dr. said that when I just could not take it anymore and my quality of life is really impaired to let him know and he will do the surgery. He also said if this does not work then he will do a fusion. The fusion is the last resort. I found info under dysensy rods and pars defect when I was searching. I recently was talking to someone and they mentioned X-stop. I really don't know how that treatment works. Good luck and I wish you a pain free new year.

    Re: Pars defect repair

    Shannon or anyone:
I ve been told born with pars defect now at age 35 it has become a 12 month chronic back pain prob. Been thru all the injections, meds etc .Neoursurgeon shows me my xray and points to a place appears to be a crack but said it is where my bones did not connect and he could go in put bone there and basically perform "fusion". Anyone tell me experience with such surgery and outcome..Thank you so much for any reply as I need help.
