Facet Joint Injections & Do you like your doc?

I just got back from Mayo clinic and the doc there suggested facet joint injections. He checked me and I had no idea I would have so much pain just from him putting a little pressure in that area. I would like to know if anybody here has had them, what it was like and how it turned out for you in the long run. I also was not very happy with the doc I ended up with there as it happened to be ( I didn't know this untill i got there ) the exact same one I was originally assigned to years ago for a huge disk herniation after 6 solid months of physical therapy, epidural injections etc. and he suggested more aggressive therapy and more injections, knowing I still could not stand for 5 minutes without pain. At that time common sense told me more injections of the same kind and therapy were not going to do a thing so I went on my own to a neuro. and ended up having surgery. This doc I don't care for seems think that what you are told by your doctor may influence how you heal, because when I said the doc said i had arthritis and stenosis, he said everybody has a little of each, he shouldn't have told me that etc. and made a remark to the effect that none of this was severe on my MRI and very minimal, practically dismissing my pain ( funny, the doc here showed it to me ) which of course made my mind up about him again! This was before he checked me and found the source, how did he find it if it didn't show up or was so minimal???. I had also told him I wanted him to show me the MRI and explain it to me so I knew what was going on, he claimed there wasn't much to show with it in front of him acting like this was going to make a difference in my pain. I am not going back to him as I found out I can have the injections in my home town and if I need a specialist again, I am choosing a different one.

Re: Facet Joint Injections & Do you like your doc?

Hello Kasey,

How funny, I just had the facet joint injection at the Mayo Clinic. The Drs, I have seen there were very nice....actually, I just posted about my visit... The PM Dr. who saw me was so nice this visit...and just before he gave me the facet joint injection, he said that he would not give up on me, that he would find the cause of my pain. Let me tell you, after 4 years of pain, and having various Drs. basically blow me away...or make me feel like I was making up my pain...well, that just about made me cry.
I am so sorry that you are having a bad experience with your Dr., it happens, but you might want to ask if you can see another Dr. there...someone else did that, and she saw another Dr.
I haven't made up my mind about the injection as yet...may be working...it was just last Tuesday...they said to give it 10 days.

My husband had the facet joint injections last month, and they have helped him...he just said that he has to go back to the PM Dr....that the pain is returning, but that they can do another proceedure, and hopefully it will take care of the pain for a long period of time.....

I hope that you can find a Dr. in your area to help you. The shots themselves are not too bad. The numbing injection is the worst, and if you count to 10...that goes away (burning feeling)
Good luck...hope you feel better.

Sage

Re: Facet Joint Injections & Do you like your doc?

Hi Sage, thankyou for your quick reply. Did you go to the one in Minnesota? I do know all doctors are different and I have always had alot of faith in the Mayo clinic and still do, I do not stay with doctors who have the demeanor that they know everything and I am not entitled to know about my own back and the cause of my problems. I was happy with other doctors I have seen there over the years though. I just read that an MRI is not the best diagnostic tool for facet joint arthritis, but some type of CT scan ( I think it was ) is, do you know anything about that? I had an MRI. I am contacting my doctor here to have the injections, and asking for a referral to a dif. doctor only if I need to see one again. Please let me know how your injection turned out. Did they give you anything to relax you for this procedure? I was told I couldn't drive myself home if I had it there, which is the only reason I didn't as I had no idea this would be the treatment so I had nobody with me and live 2 hours away. I had just gone there for my first visit. I always like to know what is going on with my back and why I have the pain or limp etc. and get very frustrated when I am dismissed like that as I have a right to know, I mean there is obviously something wrong or I wouldn't be there in the first place and he wouldn't be ordering the injections. I am going to have the injection here where i live and go from there. Let me know how you do please!

Re: Facet Joint Injections & Do you like your doc?

Dear Kasey,

I just had the facet joint injections 8 days ago..last Tuesday. So far, I think I see a decrease in pain...and a different quality to what is left. I am not saying that the pain is gone...just different. The leg pain is not as bad...thank goodness. The back pain now seems more localized across my lower back, BUT, I am noticing it more on both sides now. The muscle spasm on the right side of my back (the big muscle along the spine) seems to have let up a bit. In the late morning/afternoon, I have noticed that the pain is soooo much better....especially if I am walking...but then it returns. I am wondering if that small cyst in the facet joint had a lot to do with the leg/ankle/foot pain. Could it have been causing the nerve to be more irritated?
I went to the Mayo in Florida. I had been there six months ago to see the neurosurgeon, who could not find what he was looking for, and basically dumped me. Needless to say, I was very discouraged at that time. But, the pain was still there, and finally I was referred to the Pain Mgmt. Dept. They have been so kind to me...compared to a lot of other people. I will be getting a call from them in a few days, they will want to know what is going on, as well as how well the injection has worked...and then let me know what is up next. At my first visit to the PM Dr., he said it could be the facet joint..but if that wasn't the problem, they would do SI injection...and finally maybe a discogram. But first they wanted me to take cymbalta, which my body HATED..it caused me the nausea/headache/tiredness, which I know I would have gotten over, BUT, those types of meds. seem to cause me to become very very angry...very ugly...have had that experience before..so I didn't continue taking it. The PM Dr. said anyone who has had pain for 4 years has to be depressed. Naw, not depressed...pity party once in a while..anxiety once in a while, but I get over it. Xanax would have been better, but I am not a Dr...
The injections were not that bad...the numbing med. is the worst, like a bee sting...and it's gone in 10 seconds. You feel a lot of pressure when they do the injection...uncomfortable for a short time. After the injection, I felt like I had a major charlie horse cramp in my buttock...and it hurt to step on the right leg..but that all went away fairly fast. Have had much worse tests. Just laid there, like a stone..and let them do what had to be done...took some deep breaths...and let them know when it hurt.

Have a better day.

Sage

I had the Facet injection last year I actually had 2 sets 2 weeks apart. I didn't get any relief from them They didn't hurt me at all and I'm a big sissy when it comes to needles. Just a little sting and thats all.

I didn't understand , my ex doctor said if the facet injections worked he wanted to burn my nerve thats causing the pain. After the injections failed he suggested I got the nerve burnt. I told him no because the injections didn't work it would be a waste of time and pain.

Re: Facet Joint Injections & Do you like your doc?

Hi Kasey

I had Facet Joint injections in 5 places in my lower back last september.
They put me right out for them so didnt feel a thing till i woke up!
Very Very Painful!!
I couldnt go bact to work for a week an it took ages for where the actual injection points to simmer down.
I know sometimes they numb the back as well but they didnt do that with me.
I have seen a slight improvement in my flexibility but i carnt say the pain has eased any.
Am starting Back Care classes next week which hopefully will help!

I hope you get some relieve soon.

Best wishes

Hi Sherri it sounds like you had a bad experience with them. I didn't know they put you out for that ? My Dr. told me he wanted me alert for the injections ? The needles are hair like thickness not like a epidural. I'm very scared of needles but funny it didn't hurt me at all ??

Sorry you had a bad experience with them.
Hi Kasey

Re: Facet Joint Injections & Do you like your doc?

Sage, I've had pain in my very low back and buttocks for 2 months, waking up mornings with it, and a few mornings it was so bad I couldn't move. It also will go into my hips, down to my knees and ache, and down to my left ankle on the outside. So with your pain, it is so hard to tell because I don't have a cyst, but have stenosis also, I am not sure which is causing this. Then it will come on during the day for seemingly no reason. I read that these injections are for diagnostic purposes only, and if it does not take all your pain away, they then look at other causes.

Shawley, I would have done the same thing you did. Maybe you are talking about the epidurals? They give these two weeks apart, facets can only be done a few times a year. I had the epidurals, two of them, two weeks apart, they didn't touch me or help me at all, yet she wanted to do another one, I also said no, when two don't touch you, why bother with another. I think they want so bad to help us that they want to keep trying but there's no reason to when two did nothing.

Sherry, I am glad to hear they put you out for them, 5 places is alot of pain! Do you know what the next step is if these do not work? I always think ahead because I had epidurals years ago for a disk that didn't work at all for me and this problem has been going on awhile. Do you have arthritis on your facets?

Nope I had Facet injections , Like Sherri said there was like 4 or 5 injections on each side, thats how they do them. I had these done only twice. I DO NOT like Epidurals...They hurt bad for me. The needles on the Facet injections are thinner than the epidurals needle. Personally I don't like any injections but the Facet injection's wasn't bad for me ,Not saying it's not bad for everyone. It just didn't bother me like the epidurals did.

Have a great day

Re: Facet Joint Injections & Do you like your doc?

Hi Kasey

Well the Facet injections are really done as a diagnostic procedure.
I havent actually had anyone say to me 'yes it is your Facet joints that are the problem'.
Basically i am still under going tests.
I think you can have the Facet joints injected 3 times but i carnt see why because surely if they didnt work the first time they wont work a second or third time.
Treatment takes so long here in the UK.

I was told the next step may be a fusion of l5-S1 but for me surgery is going to be the very last resort.

Starting pain management next week so heres hoping!

Best wishes

Re: Facet Joint Injections & Do you like your doc?

Shawley, I assumed they gave you a sedative and numbed the area, this is what I had with the epidurals, so I don't remember any of it and I felt nothing. I am sorry you had to go through that. I had read up on them before hand and found out some docs don't use the sedative or numbing and I told my doc I wouldn't do it otherwise. I think we all go through enough pain the way it is. I sure would like to know what is the matter with me so I can atleast try to help myself.

Kasey,
They gave me a local to numb the skin that was all. It really hurt when I got my epidural but Like I said the Facet injection didn't bother me I told the doctor I wanted something for my nerves because I was scared , he said NO and if I didn't like it don't have it done. He did the injections twice on me and I never went back to him again. He wasn't very nice. My new pain management guy gives me valiums when he injects me.
I like him also. Nice guy to talk to.

What problems are you having ? Your Dr. doesn't know whats wrong ?
Hope they do somthing for your pain.

Re: Facet Joint Injections & Do you like your doc?

My problems go back years and years but I had surgery on a herniation 6 years ago, tried going back to work, I could not stand for half hour without pain. I went on a trip with my sister 2 months ago, we had to walk 17 blocks to the train station and within 2 days, I was laid up with aching pain in low back and upper buttocks, some would go down my legs to my knees. It also would cause me to limp and turn my left foot out. For a week I couldn't walk well. I wake most mornings with some low back pain, and a few I couldn't even move. He checked the area of my jacet joints and lumbar and it is very sensitive and hurts like heck when he put a little pressure on it. I have atleast some problem 90% of the time, with a little pain, or limping, then it will be alot of pain, so I guess these shots are to find the source. Oh, I was told by doc here and neuro years ago that I had stenosis, and also arthritis.
