Epidural injection injects steroids directly into the epidural space in the spine surrounding the nerves to reduce inflammation and a nerve block injects of an anesthetic directly in the area of the affected nerve. The purpose of a nerve block is to determine whether or not a particular nerve root is the direct cause of the pain. They may or may not inject steroids during a nerve block as well.
