Anyone know this, tear in the hip?How does SI joint affect the hip?

I was told 2 years ago I have a SI Joint dysfunction. Have had terrible buttocks and leg sciatica in the right leg with Right thigh and Right hip pain, difficulty walkng and sitting, bending forward.I also have left leg hotness sensation. The only test I ever had was a lumbar MRI that reveals a slightly bulged disk at L5-S1. I really don't know the relationship between the disk bulge and the sciatic pain, no one has ever really explained that to me and no one ever really listened to me when I said my hip and thigh are affected. I saw a new doctor yesterday,(my first pain management ever because I can't deal with the pain anymore.) At first he said he would do an epidural injection to see if it releives the pain(this was after looking at the MRI of the lumbar spine.) I asked him how does that relieve SI joint pain and he got mad at first, then listened to me and my pain I describe sounds like a tear in the hip. He is ordering an MRI for me of the hip. I am awaiting the precert right now. Anyone ever have this? How does the spinal injection releive pain in the buttocks? G

Hello, sorry you have to go through this.
I do have SIJ problems as well, i had tear in my hip also. Tear in a hip heals by itself same as tear in a discs. This is not a big deal, although it can cause some pain. SIJ problems are very painful, pain goes down to the hip, pelvic. areas. Trained Doctors who are familiar with this type problems can evaluate you and diagnose if this is actually SIJ. But i just want to add that no tests are available which show SIJ problems: no MRI or CT or any others, unfortunatelly.
    Good luck to you.

Sorry to hear you're in such pain, I know where you're coming from regarding the pain in the hip. I have posted some exercises, manauvers, to help slip the SIs back in Sept and Oct of 06 so if you do a search under my forum name you might be able to find them.

What you might be experiencing as well is what's called Piriformis Syndrome, as this will cause severe hip pain. This muscle connects the anterior end of the femur tip to the sacrum and when it starts to spasm it irritates the sciatic nerve big time, and then everything suffers. This is usually the problem first and then the SI joints gets stressed. If your doctor could get that muscle to calm down first, you would have better progress I think in getting the rest of the pelvis to start working better.

Re: Anyone know this, tear in the hip?How does SI joint affect the hip?

Thanks to all for your responses. I have been at my wits end with this ordeal and needed to ask if anyone knew what tests are availablle for this SI Joint thing. It seems I am the doctor now, any research I can bring to a doctor and tell them they may just listen to me and do the test. When I first was hurt(after bending forward and lifting someone heavy) I was left incapacitated, absolutely could not sit , stand, walk, think, bones crunched in the butt and hip area. My pain was unreleived by antiinflammatorys. I have had physical therapy, injections etc, I use pain patches, Lidocaine. Antiinflammatorys make me sick. The 2 doctors I saw at first who looked at the lumbar MRI and was told it was refferred pain, but I knew more was wrong. My family doc did say Piriformis Syndrome and said to see the chiro and see if that helps, he said he didn't want me to see a pain specialists because injections and the like are waste of time. I did that finally one year later out of desperation. The chiro did active release on the butt and leg. Said I have deep tissue problems. He did do the Xray thing first , and took it slow with me. After 2 weeks my pain decreased 50%, (10 to a 5)and I had my first glimmer of hope, had my first tear free day ina year, and actually slept thru the night. He also worked on the hip flexors. After a month or so , he started adjustments, and my lumbar spine started to hurt. It seems to me that some of the pain shifted to left lumbar spine!!!! After a few more months,I was able to abduct the right leg, bend alittle more freely and the bone crunching in the butt and leg seemed to be less and less. I would experience it when changing position from laying to sitting. Then the pain increased in the lumbar area and I couldnt take it anymore, so I stopped seeing the chiro....for now. I still have butt, hip and thigh pain 24/7 but it fluctuates in intensity. It increases with activity.Anyway almost two years later, after losing everything, my job, family, friends, an income, a social life, the abilty to function mentally (severe depression)and sporatic visits to a doctor, I have branched out for a set of new eyes. But it does seem to be a losing battle, from what I read about Piriformis syndrome, it is hard to diagnose on film. I am still waiting for the new doctors office to call with a precert number for this hip mri. Thanks for listening, can you tell I am having a down day? G

Re: Anyone know this, tear in the hip?How does SI joint affect the hip?

Hi: I was dx with sacroiliitis with an x-ray. I went to a Rheumatologists for tests, and while he was checking for Rheumatoid arthritis he also x-rayed my hips, pelvis and si joint. The dx was obtained thru the x-ray, physical exam, and blood tests.

I have no idea what you do for this, since the dr I saw said the only thing he could think of was exercise. I've had many spinal fusions with perm nerve damage, and sciatica, plus knee and feet swelling and pain. If you have this, you might want to ask about anklosing spondolosis, since the two are connected "sometimes".

    Good luck...
