    Elavil Anyone?

    Hello All...

I just got back from the spine specialist and he talked me into getting another ESI. I didn't want to go through it again after my last reaction but am willing to try anything to get rid of the pain. He did mention the possibility of a laminectomy with a discectomy...a subject I didn't really want to hear. I've had my share of surgeries...just had one a year ago and not really interested in doing it again anytime soon. He prescribed an anti-depressant... but I'm not depressed! It seems to be a commonly prescribed medicine for pain but why? He prescribed mine to help with sleeping. Has anyone taken Elavil and what side effects did you have?

    Re: Elavil Anyone?

    Hi,

Some docs use Elavil for off-label use, such as pain. Many rheumys prescribe it to people diagnosed with fibromyalgia also, as it seems to help many fibro sufferers with their pain. I have read that sometimes one's chemicals like serotonin can be off balance and cause one to feel more pain, and so on. So it does seem to help some, though I'm sure it all depends on what pain.

I have lupus & my rheumy thought I may also have fibro, so I was given Elavil for the fibro. For me, it did absolutely nothing EXCEPT put me right to sleep. So even tho it didnt do anything for my pains, it really helped me sleep and is not habit forming at all like some sleeping meds. I only took a tiny dose once per evening. After that bad flare, I ended up developing back pains, which went on & got worse over several years. I had tried it again to see if would help, but it did nothing. My pain was so bad It didnt keep me asleep anymore either. I have seen others with other types of pain be given Elavil, because there is a chance it might help, but of course there's no guarantee. It's like doc giving other meds to try for something it's not necessarily approved for. It doesnt necessarily mean you are depressed. My rheumy also had me try Lidocaine patches for my back pain (but this was only approved for the nerve pain from shingles..so my insurance co-pay was really high). It seemed to help a little in my early stages, but it ended up my spine was getting bad too quickly and the patches just didnt help anymore. I tried them even though I never had shingles b/c it might have helped.

If you have any kind of nerve pain, though..I'm not sure that Elavil would give you any relief. Then again, ya never know...

    Re: Elavil Anyone?

Hi, I was on Elavil for 4 weeks and it was extremely helpful with my nerve pain and I would have stayed on it if I could have. I developed a side affect on it and had to go off of it. My joints in my hand started hurting and then they begin blowing up from fluid. My ankles were puffy too. As soon as I went off it, they were so much better.

I know Clover took it. I believe it was for foot drop and it helped her tremendously as well.

It is definitely worth a try if you are having nerve pain.

Personally, if I could take it I would. I have even given thought to trying one more time.

Good luck and I hope it provides you with some relief.

    Re: Elavil Anyone?

I have been on and off elavil for years. It was first prescribed to me to help me sleep better which, in turn, should have helped my fibro. I didn't notice any improvement in my pain and 15 years later, I still don't get any relief. But I do get a great nights sleep when I take it. This is the first time I've ever read that it helped people with their pain. I can't help but wonder if the pain decreased because of the rest people get, rather than the med working on the pain itself..........

I would give it a try, especially if you don't sleep well. The first few times you take it, you might feel a bit draggy(is that even a word? LOL) in the morning but after a few days you should be fine.

HI, i am currently taking the ned for nerve pain and sleep as well as for some depression. I am on 100mg and it only puts me to sleep as far as I know. I dint think i have had any side effects, but now hearing peppers response i did have masive selling a couple of weeks ago, i was given a water pill and doc stopped topomax. So i dont know if it was the elavil or not, does not help with my nerve pain at all, i wish you the best.

    Re: Elavil Anyone?

I actually took Elavil for years for my bladder. I took it before bed. It is given to young children that wet the bed. I was in my 30's. It was suppose to stretch my bladder so I would not get up all night. It worked. Only side effect I thought I had was being drowsy the next morning. Found out years later I had Obstructive Sleep Apnea. So really no side effects. My doctor told me it was an anti-depressant but used for everything and anything but depression. I think when better anti-depressants came out they probably stopped using it. It is also used for nerve pain. I went back on it for a while but did not help the pain. So I am on Lyrica now.

    Re: Elavil Anyone?

    Hello Tothebeach!
Good question..., I'm on Prozac for Major 'D'. I also have herniated on L-3/L-4 and degenerative on all C-spine. The anti- depressant does help me to forget the pain and the fact that I'm no longer able to work. SSI already said I'm permanent. It's been nice that Tramadol has helped with the pain and the Prozac helped me forget! Tramadol is still a dirivative of an Opiate, yet it's less addictive. Morph on the other hand is too strong for what we go thru.
Forgive me for saying this... I've had to bite the bullet as far as pain goes. #1 reason, no one sees the pain I go thru, they don't believe it. I've been legally told that I'm faking it! They don't even believe a Neurologist or 3 MRI's.
Seeing a psychologist or psyc?itrist is not a bad thing!! I've seen 5 in the past 10 years and they have helped even with pain. My PM Dr. messed up on all the Epidurals and four years later, it still leaks. Don't give up on anti-depressants, and find other forms of Pain killers. I hope this helps some.

    Re: Elavil Anyone?

    Hi,

I have been on Elavil for about 6 weeks now for nerve pain. Was taken off Cymbalta cause the Cymbalta was not working and the Elavil was supposed to help me with my sleep. Well, it does nothing for my sleep and it helps a little bit with the nerve pain. However, I currently have joint pain in my hands since starting it and after reading another post by Diet Pepper, this is how her problems with Elavil started. So, I am thinking I won't be taking the Elavil much longer. I only take one 25mg at bedtime, was supposed to take 2, but I could not function at all when on 2 of them, I was like a zombie.

Wish you the best of luck and success with the Elavil.

    ~hugs Niki

    Re: Elavil Anyone?

Hmm, when I was taking it, I only had low dose 10mg pills. So maybe more MG's might have helped with pain better, I don't know. But then again, the10 mg made me zonk out like a light bulb within an hour of taking it so If I took any higher dose, I dont think I would have functioned.

    Re: Elavil Anyone?

I take 25 mg twice a day and it has been wonderful for my nerve pain....works better than anything else. I've tried to wean myself off it, and I get these awful shooting pains in my calves and feet. I take 2 gabapentin, 2 elavil and a piroxicam daily and still walk over 4 miles a day, and doing fairly well I guess, 1 1/2 years after surgery.

    Re: Elavil Anyone?

I am taking Elavil to sleep. My doctor said if you do not sleep for long periods of time it makes the pain worse. I would stay awake for 24 to 48 hours straight with pain from back problems and fibromyalgia. So he told me it is a pill for depression but he was not giving it to me for that reason he was giving it to me for a sleep aid. I was taking 50 mgs at bed time but it was not putting me to sleep after a few weeks so he now has me on 100 mgs at bed time. I really have do not have any side effects from it at this time which I am thank full for and have been taking it for over a month now. It has been helping me to sleep which makes me happy!

The not sleeping at night time is the pits. I am so glad it is working for you.

    Re: Elavil Anyone?

Thank you everyone for such an overwhelming response! You all are angels. The bad news the elavil isn't working. In fact, I think I've gotten less sleep in the past two days. It seems like my mind wants to sleep but my body says otherwise. Kinda how you get restless legs...this feels like restless body. I think I'm going to call the doctor and have him change the medicine. My first restless night I thought my body needed to get used to the medicine but two nights in a row...I feel like a zombie today. I can't take it.

Totally off subject...but has anyone tried swimming as a form of exercise to strengthen your back and has it helped?

    Re: Elavil Anyone?

Sorry that elavil is not working for you but it might take at least a week before you notice a difference. I don't think 2 nights is enough time personally.

I personally love the pool and spa. They have helped me immensely with pain management. When nothing else works, I put on my suit and go out into the water.

I generally warm up and cool down by boiling in the spa for about 10 minutes before and after using the pool. It helps loosen the muscles.

I then put a intertube around my middle - my kids love this and say I am wearing a tutu (LOL) - and climb down into the pool. I then pretend I am riding a bike and venture over to the deep in. I bicycle ride from the deep end to about 4 ft and then turn around and go back. When I tire of this, I do the leg movements of jumping jacks under the water. Then I bring my knees up under the water to the bottom of my intertube but never bringing them out of the water. I also pretend like I am running in the deep end.

I have found doing this water exercises does hurt but it has made me so much more flexible. The hard part is when I come out of the pool, the pain levels jump but once I sit in the hot tub it generally brings it back down. Does it cause me pain after the pool, yes but if I was not in the pool my back hurts anyway. It has definitely helped with my flexibility and in the long run I hope this helps me.

Before trying any of the water exercises I would have a talk with your surgeon about what is good for your specific back situation. Good luck.

    Re: Elavil Anyone?

Swimming is one thing I haven't been able to do....my core muscles are still really weak and when I'm on my stomach in the water my gut sinks down and my back arches. And since I tore my rotator cuff, I can't use my arms to paddle/stroke anyway.

The elavil takes a few weeks to build up to a therapeutic level... When I stopped taking it, that's how long I was in misery until it got built up again. I started out at a low dose 10 mg twice a day and now I'm up to 25 x 2 a day
It's depressing to realize that the pain is still there after this long but I'm still better off than before surgery. The bad side effects (zombie) will wear off in a few weeks.
