    MRI Results...Please help!

I have questions about the following findings on my MRI done on my lower lumbar spine. I have been having trouble with my back for 5 and a half years. In April of this year, my back "went out" again, and I haven't regained full use yet. I have severe pain down my left leg, also. I was wondering if my MRI results could be broken down to better understand them. The following are the findings on my MRI:
-Incidental uncovertebral body and hemangiomas at L4.
-At L4-5, there is minimal facet hypertrophy.
-At L5-S1, there is slight retrolisthesis of L5 on S1 with uncovered disc, annular fissure, and small central bulge versus minimal midline disc protrusion and slight abutment of the thecal sac.
    -No nerve root compression.
-Some mild degenerative change at L5-S1.
-Mild facet degenerative change at the lower lumbar spine.
-Probable tiny central disc protrusion at L5-S1, but with no nerve root compression.
I appreciate your time with my question.

Hi there - I understand some of it.

You have a disc bulging at Lumbar 5 with an annular tear. A disc bulging out will compress the nerve and cause pain down your leg. It says no nerve root compression, but any disc bulging will hit the nerve.

Have you had physiotherapy for this complaint first?

So sorry that you have had continuing pain for so long. I do understand how upsetting this can be.

Some mild degenerative change at L5-S1.
-Mild facet degenerative change at the lower lumbar spine

Those 2 lines seem to indicate you have facet joint arthritis....this can be very painful. It can also cause some of your symptoms..yes, I do have it, and it has caused leg/foot pain as well as back pain for me. There are injections which may help you...my husband has had great success with the facet injections.... I had them also...and also a radiofrequency on the nerve...but that didn't help me as much as it should....Other people have said they had great relief for several months from this procedure...

Hope you have a better day.

    Sage

you also have retrolethesis which is spondyolethesis if you are looking stuff up.

If you look up degenerative disc disease you will see it sort of degenerates in phases. You might still be in the good phases or the test make it sound that way, Just remember surgery is always the last resort.

Walk as much as possible, don't do jarring stuff like running etc lol (you wouldn't believe some people actually do and ask about it) Remember you have this, and try to do all you can to keep your abs and back and hamstrings as strong as possible.

ofcourse I dont' know if you've already had pt etc

    Re: MRI Results...Please help!

I just wanted to say "Hi there" and welcome you to the board. I also want to add that an MRI is not always able to tell the whole story. I had 2 bulging discs in my neck that did not show up on MRI; my complaints finally convinced my surgeon that there was something going on; he expected to find a bad disc but was very surprised that there were two of them. My husband was in a car accident and suffered whiplash. His MRI showed a bone spur but his symptoms of pain kept getting worse and he finally convinced the surgeon to go in and take a look. He not only had the bone spur touching a nerve, he had 2 large bulging discs as well.

So if this pain continues or gets worse, you may need further tests such as a myelogram-ct scan. That's a good way to see if there may be a nerve being pinched that is causing some of your pain.

Good luck to you; I hope you will keep us updated on how you are doing.

    Carol

    Re: MRI Results...Please help!

First of all, thank you all for your responses. It is so relieving to find others that are experiencing the same problems (although, I wish you did not have to go through this). Since April, I have had physical therapy (which I had to discontinue because it was worsening the discs). The physical therapists actually told me that I had to discontinue the therapy because it was making my problems worse (which included uncontrollable deep muscle spasms). My doctor told me that a chiropractor would also be bad for my condition. My internal medicine doctor moved out of the city...so I am going to see a new doctor on Thursday, December 20th. I am wondering about taking medication daily for my condition (my doctor explained to me before he left that surgery would worsen the problems). Do any of you have any suggestions? I go to college full-time, so I need something to ease the pain (at least a little relief would be better than nothing). I will be sure to let you all know what I find out Thursday at my doctor's appointment. Thank you!

    Re: MRI Results...Please help!

I just wanted to let everyone know that I had an appointment with my new primary care physician today, and she was very sincere! I told her about my recurrent severe pain in my left leg and about the constant pain in my lower lumbar spine. She prescribed me 5-500 MG of Hydroco/Apap for the severe pain, Cymbalta for pain and moods (because I have really been feeling low since the pain began), and Meloxicam 15 MG (NSAID) for osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. She told me to still take the Flexeril (spelling?) and Diclofenac. I have an appointment with a neurosurgeon on January 10th. I am praying that appointment will go well and that I can get some relief! I will keep everyone posted and am praying that all of you get some relief from your recurrent pain!

I am so happy that your GP was willing to provide you medicine to make you as comfortable as you await for your specialist appt. That in itself is excellent because you know that she will be there to support you in the future if needed. I pray that the meds provide you enough relief so that you may enjoy the holidays with your family. God Bless.

Thank you so much, Mrs. Pepper. I want to wish everyone on this board a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! I also would like to wish you all a Happy "Pain-Free" Holiday Season. I will be sure to keep everyone updated, as my neurosurgeon appointment slowly approaches.
