pinched nerve in right hip
Hi everyone, I am new to this group so let me know if I do something wrong. I am not used to message boards, but I am desperate! About 1/1/2 yrs ago, I was thrown from a horse. I broke my tail bone and 6 ribs on my right side. My bones healed but I slowly have been getting worse. Doctors say I have a pinched nerve in my right hip. I have had a MRI, ex-rays, lumbar injections, physical therapy, and the latest is acqupuncture. I am 61 years old and my life as I know it is pretty much non existant. The pain, at times puts me on my knees. If I get up out of a chair the wrong way or turn over in bed wrong the pain shoots down my leg, in front, and to my foot. My husband live on 20 acres. We have horses and dogs and love our country life. This passed summer, I was not able to keep up with my daily activities around the farm. My husband is real good about it and we pray everyday for an answer. He cannot continue to work all day and then come home and do all the other chores. If things don't change I will have to sell my horses (they are my life) and we will have to scale down. Well, I guess I have rambeled on long enough. I am a Christian, but some days I just don't want to do this anymore.

Re: pinched nerve in right hip
Hi, i am sorry you're dealing with all that pain & not being able to enjoy the things you used to. All of us on this board know all too well about that, so you are definitely not alone!

You said your doctor said you have a pinched nerve in your hip. Do you know if it's actually in your hip or it is in your spine & the pain's referring to your hip? What did the doctor say is causing the pinched nerve? And what sort of doctors have you seen? Have you seen a neurological or orthopedic spine specialist? Or just a GP, etc.?

Re: pinched nerve in right hip
Hi, thanks for your response. I saw a ortho. surgeon. He said I was not a surgery candiate and refured me to Pain Management. That is the doctor that has given me 3 injections. I acctually don't know if my pain is in my back, I do have 2 bulging disks. I just know that the pain in my hip is awful.

Re: pinched nerve in right hip
I am so sorry you are in so much pain, this is a terrible accident...
Pinched nerve not always shown on any tests, unfortunatelly.
I posted earlier about my BIL who had a lot of pain in a back and his groin area for 2 years and nobody could diagnosed him. He had accupancture (25 sessions) and now he feels so much better.
His DR said that if pain comes back they will have to open him up to check if any nerves compressed even though no tests show this is the problem.

Take it easy though, I learned that with this kind of problem more you push more pain your create.
Best wishes to you and family.

Re: pinched nerve in right hip
I would suggest that you get more information about your diagnosis so that you better understand what is causing the pain. If you aren't able to get relief from the treatment you are receiving, I would suggest you get a second opinion from a specialist in a different practice from your current doc.

It would be helpful to have a diagnosis so that you would have a better idea of how to locate a specialist that might be able to help you further.

I hope accupuncture will help your pain.

Re: pinched nerve in right hip
i had the same problem. You got a pinched nerve for sure. I did physical therapy for a while and all it did was delay the inevitable. Go see a doctor. Surgery is easy and quick. I was back to normal within 4-5 months. When you tear your ACL, 4-5 months sound pretty damn good. My back hurts still somedays, but you sound worse then i did. For a while i was popping about 5-6 aleve at a time my body got that dependant on it. See a doctor and be like i was. When you have surgery instead of seeing it as negative, think of it as "no more pain!!" ..... it works

Re: pinched nerve in right hip
Often what we percieve as a pinched nerve in the hip is really caused by disc herniations or other spinal problems. Years ago I thought I had a hip problem due to hip pain that sometimes radiated down my leg. That's when I learned about the sciatic nerve that starts at the spine and goes all the way down the leg. So the hip pain could indeed really be a spinal problem.

Re: pinched nerve in right hip
Thank you for your advice. My doctors have said I am not a surgery candiate. I am going to find out why. I am seeing a new ortho. next month. Did your legs become weak? I feel like they way 50 lbs. a piece. What did they do exactally doing your surgery?
I do have pain down my leg, but it is not in the back. It is in the front around my shin mostly.

Re: pinched nerve in right hip
Sorry you are having such pain and discomfort. I am 63 years old and almost 4 months ago I had decompression and fusion at L5/S1 disks. I don't want to sound as if I am discourraging you, but I am in more pain now than I was before. I also had a lot of pain in my back and right leg and still do except it is worse. I have been taking pain meds (hydrocodone) since my surgery and cannot stop because of the pain and am very worried about addiction.
What I want to say to you is be carefull and make the right decision for you, I wish I could go back to before the surgery, i would not have had it!!

Re: pinched nerve in right hip
Sorry to hear of your troubles, but don't despair too much.

Need to ascertain whether the disc herniation is the cause of your pain, or something else.

My gut feeling is it could be a misalignment issue considering that the injury is a result of trauma. It could be simply that your pelvis is misaligned which is putting undue pressure on your spine. Often these complaints have a very simple cause.

Bulging discs can be painful, but remember at your age, most people would actually show some degree of disc bulge along the length of their spine. Bulging discs aren't necessarily painful.

Try and see a really good physio who knows what they are talking about. The sports ones are the best. I really think manipulation could be your answer, as well some lumbar stabilisation exercises/swimming. It's worth a shot anyway!

Re: pinched nerve in right hip
I would suggest seeing a neurosurgeon who specializes in spine, not an ortho.
Hope you are better soon.
