inflammation when you had discectomy

Hello, i had a discectomy surgey in septemebr 2007. everything was going fine and the doc told me that everything is ok and now i can do what ever i want. But three days ago i ahve some oains on my leg and back and the doc told me that its an iflammation and i should take antiiflammation pills and i will be fine. i am really stressed if this goes back to the way before the surgery? Is this possible? Or is it just an iflammatuion? ps. i was doing a bit of heavy lifting after xmas, is it that the reason a got an iflammation??

I imagine it could be inflammation, but whatever it is I'm sure that your heavy lifting probably caused it. Try to avoid heavy lifting if you can - you're only 4 months post-surgery. Still try to take very careful care of yourself. I wouldn't freak out yet. I'm sure it's just a flare-up. Take the anti-inflammatories & see what happens (I've always been told you can take up to 800mg at a time, i.e., 4 regular Advil, 3 times/day).

hey! thanks for replying!! do u know how long does it take for the inflammation to go away? cause i have been taking the pills since almost 5 days and the pain is getting better but not gone. actually the pain from the leg has all gone but now my back from both sides hurts, and it never hurt me before from both sides! do u think is a new thing? or it just cause of the iflammation??
i am soooo stressed!! i cant go through this again!!

Jimako,
You are probably OK if the pain is getting better. If it was too serious it would be the same or worse. You still need to really take it easy. After surgery you should NEVER left anything really heavy again. Your back is not as strong as it used to be and it will be very easy for you to re-herniate that area again. I would continue with the anti inflammatories and continue to take it easy. If it doesn't continue to get better or gets worse I would see your surgeon. Good luck!

Getting relief from the meds is a good sign. Stay on them even if you are feeling better, you wanna keep that going. I would stay on them for 3-4 weeks minimum and then talk with your doctor before deciding to stop them. You want to keep that inflammation down right now.

Hello Jimako,

What anti-inflammatory pills does your dr have you taking? Is your back pain in the same area where your discectomy was done? I think you may need to have an MRI done to see if there is anything new wrong with your back. I would recommend calling your dr first thing in the morning. Good luck to you!

Re: inflammation when you had discectomy

I would say if you are having problem after a week to 10 days and you are taking the anti-inflammatories as directed it is time to see your doctors. You may need to go on a dose of prednisone to help relieve the inflammation as well as have some follow up tests to see what is going on. I pray that you will soon be feeling better and that this is just a flare up.

Re: inflammation when you had discectomy

Hello everyone! Its me again!!! Sorry for keep on bugging you but the pain is keep on coming and going and i asked my doc and he said its a logical thing and it needs to have its cycle so i will heal better! Is this logical?
The pain comes and goes and i dont know why! Shall i start the antiiflammation pills again? Like for a week or so? Shall i strart tred mile on the gym or isit too risky? Btw today and yesterday i was hurting was i was walking too!!! Do u think the doc has right and it just needs to to it's cycle? Or the problem is bigger? If i do tred mile shall i do streching too? or is it too risky? I really dont know what to do! Shall i trust my doc?

Jimako,
I wouldn't do any heavy duty exercising at this point but walking may be fine. You are 6 months post op now and if your pain is worsening and becoming more frequent, I would ask for another MRI. Please be careful until you find out what is going on.

Re: inflammation when you had discectomy

It depends on the anti-inflammatory prescribed to you. Some takes several weeks to build-up in the system. But steroids are usually an instant intake then they back you off of them from there. So just taking an anti-inflammatory for a week may not be enough for you. You need to discuss this with the doctor.

It is possible you have reherniated again or that your in a flare up right now.

If you do not trust this doctor and have the ability to see another, do. A second opinion is always a good thing.

As to exercise, its hard to say. If you have reherniated, the wrong exercise could make things worse for you. I think this is one of those let pain be your guide thing. If you get any relief in doing some spine/core stretching... do them. If any of them cause you pain.. not.

Please keep us posted.

Re: inflammation when you had discectomy

At 6 mo. post op, I was becomming inflammed every time I bent over to pick somethig up. (I guess that is why they say not to bend, twist or lift). Anytime I did any of these movements, I became inflammed and had spasms that took days to calm down. I would highly think twice about doing any of the above mentioned movements. I would also suggest continuing to walk, esspecially if you had gotten into a walking routine. Once you stop, the more likely you will hurt. This did happen to me and looking back on it, I wish I had found the energy to get back to walking, once I was feeling better, even a little bit at a time. The walking is what helps to keep the pain down, or that is what my Dr. told me.

I really do not think this is anything to worry about, because I remember calling my Dr. so worried that my surgery had failed and wanting another MRI to make sure I was still ok. He kept assuring me this was normal. To walk as I could, but a little bit at least 2 times a day. To not do anything to over do it and when the inflamation begins again, to slow down and not to go back to doing what ever I had done the day before. I never seemed to beleive he knew what he was talking about or that he did not understand just how bad the new pain was. As it turns out, he did understand.

You may want to keep a journal of the activities you do ea. day. Then everytime you hurt more than normal, you can get an idea of what causes the pain.

Best of luck,
Lorie
