Recliner chairs ???? after fusion w/ hardware surgery????

Just checking with everyone.........I have had such difficulty sitting in a chair
since my surgery 4 weeks ago...Several people have suggested a Lazy Boy type reclining chair..

Anyone found any comfort using them, to read or watch tv? Do you simply put a pillow behind you?

    Would love your feedback.

    Many thanks...

    LAF

Re: Recliner chairs ???? after fusion w/ hardware surgery????

LAF-- hello i had a 2 level fusion l4/5 , l5/s1 - with 2 rods and 6 screws.. i do sit in a lazy - boy chair with a pillow behind my back.. It does not take long for the pain to arise , but i need to get out of bed and try to get comfortable in another position.. I had my surgery on 2.20.08 and i'm still in lots of pain....

what kind of surgery did you have and what are they giving you for the pain ? I try to walk as much as possible , even though i'm still on my walker.. My name is billy and if you have any questions please ask okay...

    god bless billy

    LAF~
After my fusion t12-l4 with hardware I found it difficult to sit in anything without a pillow behind my back. However an overstuffed cloth lazy boy type chair is wonderful for the time and the future. I just recently went to the big bass pro shop and they have a type of lazy boy chair that also heats up.....(heat patches from the store or even the roll on stuff is a life savor) that is the next chair I am going to buy. However a friend of mine who works for a furniture company told me once even the most comfortable chair gets uncomfortable after about 20 minutes.I have also noticed that if I have my legs up at an angle it feels better. But try and stay positive because with each passing day your body is healing and the pain should lessen.

Hope you have a good day
    RB

Thumbs up Re: Recliner chairs ???? after fusion w/ hardware surgery????

Wow....Hey Billy.......you were 3 days before me........I'm taking Darvocet (1 pill every 5 hours) and Neurotin (1 pill 100 mg) at bedtime for nerve pain....

I had a decompression and fusion (screws and rods) at L3-L4...They had thought I'd need more but only ended up w/ one level....

Have only been using the cane since I'm home...Do my 20 minutes of walking (today did it outside where the pavement was dry and no ice) and then lay down for 1/2 an hour a few times a day...Usually by 9:30pm.I'm pooped....
The drugs help me to sleep and I sleep with a pillow under my knees which helps....Sometimes turn on my side for an hr. or so...just for a change..w/ pillow between my knees

Another member suggested a satin bottom (fitted) sheet and it's been a BIG help makes it much easier to slide to the end of the bed when you have to get up...You can find them at JC Penny on line....a bit pricey but well worth it..a trmendous help..Just be careful not to sit on the edge of the bed too long....you can slide off and get hurt...

How you are feeling better soon....

Re: Recliner chairs ???? after fusion w/ hardware surgery????

After surgery I had trouble sitting in just about everything. The only chair that seemed to work was a simple metal frame office type chair that sat up straight, with a pillow behind me. Trying to sit on a couch or recliner was agony. The doctor told me either sit up straight no slouching or lay on side, which turned out to be the only positions I could do. It does get a little tiring day after day sitting up with no slouching, but it does seem to help.

We have a sectional couch with chaise lounges on the end. Right after my surgery I practically lived on that. Its great cause you can lay down with a pillow and still watch t.v Now I want a recliner with heat and massage but we just don't have enough room for one.

don't think its a good idea to use heat and massage after a fusion, first thing you got metal in there and the heat from pads etc may make problem worse or create infections.

Don't plan to get the one with the heat or the massager..Just a simple recliner...to be able to lay back to watch tv...The upright chair is SO uncomfortable.....

I have been debating a recliner too, but I have been looking at ones from a company called Ekornes. They are pretty spendy, but they come in different sizes so that they "fit" properly and give the support that is best for your body size. Has anyone else heard of them?

I have the lazy boy heater and massaging recliner and I would not give it up for anything. I have hardware and have not had any problems. The heat is not as hot as a heating pad so you will be fine.

If I didn't have my recliner, I don't know what I would have done! I call it my "nest". I have a large chair, probably sized for "big men", but it is comfy enough that I can sleep in it on really bad nights. I sit with a pillow behind my back and gets pressure off of my back since I don't have to sit with all my weight on my fusion.

That's so funny --but, how does it fit you? How do you feel in it? I was wondering what to do next. I put a twin bed in the den, but am about to outgrow it. When I have it moved out, I want to get a new chair, but didn't know if a recliner would be comfy for me, or not.

    xx MM
