Back Pain only at night and when I try to

turn over. I actually have to grab onto the covers or sheets to pull myself to be able to turn over. The only other time I have back pain is if I lay on my stomach, sometimes I can't roll over to get up. The pain is very intense. I am able to function normally during the day. I don't think it is the mattress because we travel frequently to our vacation home and farm and the same thing happens there.

OMG! Do we need to chat!!! You just described me. I've had MRI's, Nerve conduction studies, Physical Therapy, DRX-9000, Tens unit....nothing worked. Now its just Vicodin, Zanaflex, Celebrex and Lidocaine. Do you think it fixes me? Nope....just makes it bearable.

I bet you can't pick things up either??

I have to go to work, but lets chat later :)

Welcome

Have you seen a doctor concerning your pain? Since it's later at night it might be somewhat posture related (or that could be aggravating underlying problems). See your doctor, depending on what is wrong - ask your doctor about stretches, posture, and other exercises to help your back. You may be given some printed out information and diagrams for them.

Hi, I cant say for sure what it is, but what you describe sounds very typical of back spasms. I know when I get bad spasms I cannot turn either, and it's very difficult just to get up. But...spasms are usually a symptom of something. Spasms are usually a protective mechanism that causes pain so that you don't do further damage. So it could be a musclar issue or even a disc problem or something else in your spine, or like someone else said, maybe there's something amiss in your spine that causes spasms when you lay down. Of course we can't diagnose you, but it it's been going on for a while you should see your doctor.

In the mean time you might try using ice or heat over the area and taking some ibuprofen or aleve regularly.

My husband is the same way and although he is on pain patches for chronic pain something about stretching out in bed is painful so he needs oral pain meds to help with the pain. Sometimes he just has to get up and sleep in his recliner chair to keep his back in alignment. It is very frustrating to him as he just wants to go to sleep in the bed but so every night is a wait and see kind of deal.

Have you tried doing the log roll when getting out of the bed? In case you have not heard of it, here is the instructions - To get out of bed, bend your knees and roll onto your side. Keep your hips and shoulders aligned as you roll. Use your hands to help slowly raise your body as you lower your legs toward the floor.

I would definitely contact your family doctor and let him do a work up. It sounds like something is going on. Hope you are better soon.

I recently read that back pain is much worse when you sleep because you are laying still and the fluid collects around the discs etc. I guess it makes sense. Mine is much worse when I wake up in the morning. I have an adjustable bed so it is a little better. I guess moving around all day keeps the fluids moving so less swelling etc. Not sure if this makes any sense or if I even got it right.

Re: Back Pain only at night and when I try to

What my spine doctor is saying is that it's from osteoarthritis and that this is the life I'll always have. This of course is not the answer I want to hear! The pain is excrusiating. I hurt badly by morning. Right now I'm stiff and ache and hurt (4PM locally). It is one specific spot (L4) and no amount of exercise, PT or ANYTHING resolves it. I get the song and dance that my buldged discs and bone spurs do not 'hurt', that everyone has them...yadda yadda yadda.

I just want someone to shoot me at times to put me out of misery. I know it was a particular twisting movement that caused the current condition I've been in for 4 years now. It has not let up for one day.

I had a steroid shot last november and felt great for about a week. Yippie.

If you find a solution, let me know....

Re: Back Pain only at night and when I try to

I had similar back pain...it happened only at night, and made it next to impossible to roll over, breath, or to get out of bed in the am. It came and went at will and I learned to take my phone to bed with me because I was afraid I wouldn't be able to get out of bed in the am, nor would I be able to get help. This went on for a period of 1 1/2 years.

I blamed it on a slipped disc that I had over 40 years ago (no problems in the last 40 years I might add), and my doctor ruled out spinal tumors. I requested pt, which I received for 6 weeks. PT helped me overall, but it did not eliminate the pain---pain killers didn't either.

My pain disappeared when I stopped taking my water pill (hydrochlorothiazide) for high blood pressure. My doctor later denied that my pain was a side effect of medication, but the drug info sheet and other literature specifically listed back and shoulder pain---both of which I experienced on that med. And by the way, pain killers were of no help!

I have since read of others on the blood pressure boards with similar experiences...I've also read that some electrolyte imbalances also cause these problems. I don't know if I had an electrolyte imbalance on hct, or if it was simply a side effect. All I know is that I have been pain free since disco'ing meds.
