Lumbar spinal stenosis...what to expect?

I've had chronic and increasing pain in my lower back, buttocks and legs for a year now and I just got diagnosed with lumbar spinal stenosis via MRI at the age of 30. I can barely walk 10 minutes before I have to sit and rest to get the pain and numbness to stop in my legs. I have an 11 month old daughter that I can barely pick up. I cannot sleep at night because the pain is so excrutiating. I just got referred to an orthopedistic and would like to know what to expect at the first visit and what they will do to relieve the pain. I've already tried chiropractic care, NSAIDS, tylenol w/codeine, and vicodin with no relief. Thanks in advance!

He/she will more than likely give you meds that will help until they can come up with a way to possibly fix the problem....after they deplete all the PT,epidural injections, meds, etc then possibly surgery....hard to say though because so many doctors are different.

good luck and let us know what the outcome is.

I have central canal stenosis and i just turned 30. I've been a bricklayer lifting blocks since i was 16. How was your prognosis? Were you able to fully recover? I need to know if this will be a problem for the rest of my life.

I look forward to hearing what you have to say

Hey Josh!

I ended up have a microdiscetomy on L4-L5 3 years ago. I had immediate relief and had to take it easy for a year, no exercise other than walking. Today I am still doing great, no pain has returned and I've even had another baby and completed a 5K with obstacles with ease!
