Please HELP, Pain in NECK and BACK and other Symptoms after seeing Chiropractor

Hello, I just wanted to post this blog in hopes that someone may have some valuable insight or lessons learned from a situation similar to myself. I'm 27 years old and I went to a chiropractor about a year ago for my TMJ pain. My purpose was to find a good cranial chiropractor that could help with the TMJ I was experiencing for the past 7 years; which caused me severe muscle pain in my jaw, neck and back areas. The chiropractor took some x-rays and showed them to me; she said I had a mild case of Scoliosis, 2 degenerative discs in my neck with bone spurs, and calcium deposits. She also showed me a crack in the C-4 but said it was healed. She said I must have had some sort of trauma to the neck. She said she was going to try to realign my spine and relieve some of the pain. She also said I had to go through some sort of trauma and that I was too young to have this, but I didn’t do anything too strenuous since I started having pain 7 years ago. I explained to her though that the only reason I was there was for the cranial part because of the severe TMJ pain I was going through with my jaw which was affecting the muscles in my neck, back, and other areas. I also had several MRI’s and none of what she said ever showed up..they always came back negative. Hoping that she might have seen something they didn’t and because cranial chiropractors were highly recommended for TMJ I went along with her treatment. Well after seeing this chiropractor who turned out having me sign a 3 month contract to continue treatment I started having severe back pain. Eventually I noticed when I thought I was laying down straight on my back I was crooked the more I went, also I began to have to wear a back support when driving my car; something I never needed before. I was told this was part of the treatment and that it would get better. Well it didn't and the muscle pain I was having turned more into spinal pain. After 2 1/2 months of seeing the chiropractor she took x-rays and it did not look good; so much so the chiropractor right then offered to correct my spine no charge. Eventually after 3 weeks I just stopped going to the chiropractor due to her canceling my appointments for an undisclosed reason.

A month or so later after seeing the chiropractor I noticed a big drop of energy and pain in my lumbar region. My scalp burned and itched and I suddenly started to lose my hair in the front. My skin became very dry. My hands and fingers ached and popped every time I moved them, my knees began to ache and pop constantly, and everything from my back to my arms cracked when moving, it felt like I was aging quickly. It felt like whatever my body was producing it suddenly stopped or dropped significantly producing due to the many manipulations and adjustments of my cerebral spine and back; mentally and physically I was tired and drained. This made me go see a spinal specialist who took MRI’s of my neck and lumbar. It showed that I had 3 bulging disk in my neck and a slight bulge in my lumbar region. This was somewhat surprising because since the last MRI I had (a year ago) was Normal, but I was actually feeling spinal pain now and not muscle so it wasn’t all too surprising. I was referred to a Physical Therapist by the specialist, and saw him for about two months with not much result. I also had a physical from my primary care Dr. and everything came out fine he said. Right now I’m not sure what to do. I’m wondering if only way to fix this is to see another chiropractor, but I’m very skeptical of them now. Should I just continue to exercise more and do stretches like my physical therapist had me doing and hope my symptoms get better or do I really need to see a chiropractor to realign my spine? I would appreciate any advice that anyone can offer.

I certainly would not go back to the Chiropractor! Try to see a Pain Management doctor and take your MRI's with you, they can treat the pain and if you need surgery, they will also suggest that, but hopefully this Chiropractor did not mess you up too bad that you need surgery. Pain Management can do epidurals and trigger point injections for the pain.

Oh my goodness - You've really been through the ringer!

I'm with 1sunny1 on this one - don't go back to the Chiropractor - if that's what got you into this mess then I doubt it will get you out. You do have a lot of awful-sounding symptoms - try a Pain Management specialist, and see if they can put you right. Also, see if you can find a doctor to put all your symptoms together, as they might be stemming from the same 'source', so to speak.

    Good luck,

Please, please, don't go back to the chiropractor, or any other chiro either unless a medical doctor clears you first. Your MRI shows enough going on that you shouldn't even darken the doorway of a chiropractor. They can do you permanent damage. Sounds like your chiro is aware of that, since she's offering to treat you for free (probably hoping you won't sue her) and has been canceling appts (probably afraid she'll do further damage). Be aware that chiropractors don't go to medical school. Sheesh. I had extensive training in my field. Can I tack "Dr" in front of my name, too, like chiros do even though they ARE NOT DOCTORS? When and if you are cleared to see a chiropractor, definitely don't go back to the same one. Try to get a recommendation from either a doctor or someone in the medical field. At the very least, get a recommendation from a friend. There are some good chiropractors out there, and they do have their time and place. Just be very careful! If in doubt, don't go!

Going to physical therapy is a first step. Most of us have done that. It's one of the hoops the insurance company makes you jump through (or crawl through, for some of us) before they'll pay for further treatment. There are other things that can help. If you tried PT and it didn't help, it's time to go back to the spine specialist. Tell him that you did as he ordered and it didn't help. He can try injections, medications including muscle relaxants, pain meds, anti-inflammatories, and others, and also order other tests that may show more. Don't give up. You have to go through the steps. They try to do the least invasive treatment first, which is PT, then move on to other things if that isn't enough. Back problems can be very elusive, and the same problem can be completely different from one person to another. There's usually no quick fix. Patience is a must! Hang in there and get back to the spine doc. And please let us know how you're doing!

    I wish you the best,

you've got 3 bulging discs but bulging into what? If they are bulging into your spine, this will cause weakness in hands etc. Pain in spine can be arthritis and osteophytes can block nerve openings from spine as well. Stay away from chirpractors until you see neuro surgeon and neurologist for testing.

See if you can get a referral to an orthopedic spine surgeon who can do a full evaluation on you. Then he/she may recommend physical therapy, meds, etc.
