Loss of cartilage

Hi, so I just found out that my dad is having to start physical therapy due to not having cartilage between to of his discs in his spine. Basically all I was told was that they are sitting on top of each other and shooting a pain down his sciatic nerve into his hips. He aggravated it from doing Karate, he also has two cracked ribs!!

I'm just looking to find out if this is anything that can turn into long term issues? My parent's didn't really want to talk to me about it so I wasn't sure if there is something else that could result of this.
