burning upper back and neck

I have had burning pain in my neck and upper back for 3 months now. Sometimes it burns for hours and other times it burns for a little bit. It happens when I am relaxed too. Could this still be from stress, or is it something else causing this?

Hi, I hat to be the barrer of bad news. But burning sounds like nerve damage. Could be just a pinch. I would see a neuro. as soon as you can. He is a specialist in the nerves of the whole body. Good luck. Oh yes, I have it, and have had it for over 30 years. So I speak from expirence. Good luck. kathryn2

Hi - It's hard to say if there's something going on. Do you have any numbness or tingling in your arms or hands? Is the pain/burning more intense when you're active? Have you injured your neck or back in the past?

Stress can cause much of what you describe. When we're nervous/upset/stressed, the muscles tighten and/or go into spasms and it can be quite painful, as you already know. You might try using a heating pad for 20 minute intervals and then an ice pack for 20 min. Perhaps someone could massage your shoulders/back to see if that will help. If this continues, don't hesitate to talk to your doc. I know you said it's been 3 months, but what have you done to help it? Have you tried any of the above? If so, and it still hasn't helped, call your doc and let him take it from there. You shouldn't have to continue to be uncomfortable. God Bless. Peace, Lee

Re: burning upper back and neck

I have had back pain for years caused by overtight muscles, I have a hot inflammation type feeling when my muscles are very tight. I have had most success with my osteopath who can relieve the tightness. Good luck.
