Back problems increased after epidurals?

Hi, I have had back problems for about 5 years now. However, over the past 3 years, my back has gotten a lot worse. I notice, that the place it hurts the most, is where I have previously had epidurals with child birth. Is that a posibility, that when they gave me the epidural, they hurt something else in there? I miscarried at 19.5 weeks last Feb and after that epidural, things have just been horrible. I am in chronic back pain all the time. The medication, tapers it. But the pain never really goes away. I just did not know if anyone out there has also suffered from more back injury after having an epidural. Any responce would be appreciated. Thanks,

I haven't had an epidural but I've been researching this trying to decide if I should go ahead with epidural steroid injections. There are reports of side effects such as you describe from having an epidural during your pregnancy. Definately look into this more as it sounds like the most probable cause of your pain.

Thanks for your reply. I am going to ask my doctor what the chances are. My husband can actually see where the epidurals were, my back dents in in those two spots. When he touches it I go flying. Painful. Thanks and definantly research before you do the injections.

No problem.
What kind of medication did they use for the epidural?

With my daughter, I am not sure what they used but I was totally numb from waist down since I was having a c-section. With this last one, I was so traumatized that they doped me up pretty good. I remember them saying they put Valium,Oxycontin,Demerol,Morphine and something else. It still hurt. Was probably more of a mental thing. I think this second one has definantly hurt me more then the first. About mid lower back, it feels like something is just stuck in there and I can't bend over to touch my toes, or pick up my daughter unless I have taken my medicine. Once in a while, if I don't sit the right way, I get this shooting pain down my left hip and bottom area down my leg. It stinks but at least I am still alive. Just do research first. I am just now starting to wonder about it, it might be a far fetched idea but I am going to ask my Doc. Thanks,
[This message has been edited by **dolphin** (edited 10-15-2002).]

You may also have a herniated disc with symptoms of sciatica. I have that type of pain.
Get an MRI?

I have an appt with my Doc and I am going to ask him to refer me for another MRI to compare to the last MRI. If it shows something worse, then there is my answer. Thanks Juniper, keep me posted on you too. Thanks for the chats. Take care. Dolphin

Hello,

Finally, someone who understands!!

I have been suspecting for 4 1/2 years since my daughters birth that the epidural damaged something as I have been having problems with not only pain but weird things too like pins and needles and other strange sensations. All MRI's were normal as was nerve test.

I am convinced that the epidural did something....all symptoms are in that region.

Good luck.

B
