    low back & rectal pain

I'm hurting in my low back, the area where the top of your butt cheek would end, is that your lumbar area? It's been hurting for weeks. Felt like someone kicked me there pretty much. Sometimes the pain goes away, but most of the time, it aches. Worse from sitting. Today I had some very intense sharp pain there. I got really bad pressure in my rectum while this was going on, (I had a rectrocele repair in July), and both were so bad, I couldn't tell which was causing the pain. The rectal pressure settled down but I'm still aching in my back. I put ice on my back, literally made me want to cry. Any thoughts to what is wrong? Back pain or rectal issue? I also have a tender spot there in my back that won't go away.

Re: low back & rectal pain

Ho boy, this is right up my wheelhouse. Unfortunately, I have no dx for you, that has to come from your doctor. But, I can tell you about my experience.

I've had a lot of discomfort with my bottom for some time, I did once have a full weight fall on my tailbone on concrete steps along with several MVAs that have created the mess that is my spine.

I had my first rectal spasm the other day, not an experience I care to repeat. I also have IBS, which could be an issue, I suppose.

Btw, my PT suggested I literally sit on an ice pack when it flares up.
I asked my PT about the spasm & she said it surely was back related in my case. She said there is enough going on in my lumbar spine to irritate the nerves, of which there are many in that area. It's quite a complex network.

I did some searching & found the pudendal nerve could be the culprit.

Since you have had surgery in the area, I'd suggest asking your doctor about it.

But, dang. Once things get fired up in that area, it's a major source of discomfort. Even after the spasm ended (about 20-30 mins, I don't recall, but it was horrific pain), I can still feel something not right there.

Re: low back & rectal pain

I haven't had any injuries but my back has arthritic degenerative issues. Which they say is normal with aging. My low back has had it maybe 10 yrs that I know of, since I was 30. They won't do an MRI to find out what is wrong. Doesn't matter if I do tell my doctor about this, he'll be like okay, and send me on home. My neuro thinks I have ms but I don't think it's ms, I think I have a connective tissue disease. This wasn't a spasm. I get that in my upper back, but the pain was so intense I couldn't stand it. Almost reminded me of if someone would stick a needle in your artery if you know the type of pain that causes. I don't know why my rectum went all crazy though. I have IBS too, not in a flare with it right now. I guess pain from one area on top of pain from another area that close, makes it feels like it's all one thing.
