Herniated disks, tarlov cysts and now nerve pain

hello everyone, Just wanted to get off my chest some of the troubles Im having. Got injured years ago. Found out L3,4,5 went from being slightly bulged to herniated to the left. and they found multiple tarlov cysts on my S/1. Ive been having severe nerve pain which was going all the way down from front of leg to foot. Now just in last week its only on my left side, from my left knee only down to my toe. Also my foot goes completely numb. If I turn, or bend, or straighten up seems to be worse. If Im just walking straight it gets a bit better. Not sure if anyone else has had any problems such as mine. Pain was so bad that I had a cortizone injection on thursday. They said may take several days till it settles down. Thanks for letting me vent, god bless, gal

Re: Herniated disks tarlov cysts, and now nerve pain

The pain in your leg is most likely caused by the herniated discs in your lumbar spine. If the pain was on the front of the thigh it was probably a result of a nerve root compression of L3, L4 or L5. If it is down the back of your leg, the cysts may be pressing on the S1 nerve root., or it could be a compression of L5 too.

If the injection has little impact on the numbness, you may need to get a new MRI to see if the herniations have gotten worse.

When you go from tingling to numbness, it generally means that the nerve compression is getting worse.

Re: Herniated disks tarlov cysts, and now nerve pain

Thank you, thats what I think. that the never pain is getting worse. The cortizone has helped some, but definetely not enough. They gave me the shot, because I was having this electrical current pain shooting down my left leg, only from my knee to my foot. So so bad though. Id rather have muscle pain than this.. maybe not, but think you understand. I put my back out once in may, by moving my mower over, then again in june bending over picking a dead rose flower. It just seems to be getting worse, I'm afraid. Not sure what they can do, that isnt so invasive. maybe diskremoval or something. Anyways thank you so much for your response. Just hope Im not alone with this weird nerve pain. God bless, gal

Re: Herniated disks, tarlov cysts and now nerve pain

Your nerve pain sounds very typical. It all depends on which spinal nerve is irritated or pinched and to what extent. Sometimes the pain fluctuates due to amount of inflammation or depending on how the spine is bending or moving, etc.
