    Re: Back surgery gone bad

Hey folks, I hope that this finds you all well. Melissa talked with the help of an in line passe mure valve two days ago. She told me that she loved me. I broke down in tears. She got literally 15 seconds in two months to say anything she wanted to say and she chose to tell me that she loved me. She is amazing. People keep asking where I get the strength to deal with this and I tell them from her. We are still obviously in the early days of this but I am already seeing a shift in the treatment from how do we make her better to sort of how do we help her cope. I'm so tired. I'm going to sleep. I will write more soon. Goodnight. Please keep praying for us.

Dear charlie, Those are the sweetest words ive ever heard! Not why or what happened but "I love you" , it makes me cry, i can only imagine what it meant to you! You are surely tired body, mind & spirit. Now that she is more stable can you get more sleep? We are all praying in my family & friends, church lists etc & still believing for a miracle! Keep up your strength & faith. Im thankful for the update & glad she is some better. The thing that she spoke through is it feasible for her to have one all the time? So hope things get better & better for both of you especially melissa everyday! Thanks charlie.

Well, where do I start... We had our first family meeting today at two pm. It has been a long day. The meeting took two and a quarter hours. It's different when the doctors come in one at a time during the day for five or ten minutes than when you sit with them for two plus hours and get nuked with info. Especially when it isn't all good news. Bottom line is she is an ASIA A ventilator dependant Tetrapalligic. We will now start planning for her to come home in eight to ten weeks. Barring some divine intervention that is. I'm numb right now. Keep praying please...

I'm so sorry. Is Melissa aware of her situation?

Will keep praying for a miracle.

Does this team of specialists know what caused this to happen? As you can imagine, this is terrifying to those on the board who are awaiting surgery.

Blessings to you and your family.

    Re: Back surgery gone bad

Hey folks, I trust this finds you all well. I spent the last four days at home with our 4 yr old son Hunter. It's amazing how kids adapt to situations better than adults do. I brought him to see Melissa on Sunday. you should have seen him. There I was pushing her chair with ventilator in tow and he was walking beside his mom, holding her hand looking so proud. Last week one of the teachers at his preschool said that his mommy had a boo boo. He looked at her, apparently with disdain and said no she doesn't, a doctor messed up her back surgery. After four years no one in the family has apparently learned that he hears and understands and has absolutely no problem repeating anything that is said around him. Melissa's condition hasn't changed. We had a test done to see if a signal was being sent to her diaphragm via her phrenic nerve which would allow the installation of a diaphragm pacer which would allow her to be off the ventilator for up to eight hours a day but the nerve is dead. The words INFARCT and OOPS. That's all I'm probably allowed to say about it. My advice for anyone contemplating back surgery is before the scheduled date of the operation, get all your medical records in hand and know where the best spinal trauma treatment center is with the best neurosurgeons available to your location and how to get there just in case. Minutes count once the blood supply is cut off. I will keep posting on here as long as you want me to. Please Keep us in your prayers and thank you all for your support. Now starts the pursuit of nerve grafting and stem cells.

Do you now have a better understanding of what happened? Did this occur during surgery or during recovery?

Please do keep posting. You have won our hearts and we are all eager to hear how your family is doing.
