    bleached out hair still brassy?

I have medium ash blonde...used to be lighter when younger..every color I put on turns a brass color..so today I had the girl bleach the whole head and put on an Ash toner. Still came out brass..my family hates it, they think it is reddish orange...why would it still come out that color even after being bleached out? How can I get back to a blonde color?

Go back to the salon, ask for a manager and have them redo it. They didnt bleach you enough to get out the gold tones. Some hair is extremely hard to get past the gold stage. You need to have someone pro look at your hair and see if it can withstand another bleach at this time. I suggest deep conditioning in the interim.

well, I called my lady back and told her about the color and she said there is nothing that can be done...that if this didn't pull out the brassiness nothng would and she could put some highlights in it to kind of hide it..Is this true? I thought that bleaching the hair out you could put an toner on to acheive the color you wanted.

I find it difficult to believe that if your natural color is just mdium ash blonde, that it can;t be lifted enough to get rid of the brassiness. I have medium ash blonde hair & have had it highlighted for many, many years - sometimes to a very, very light blonde (almost platinum) - and have never had brassiness. It sounds to me like your salon doesn't know how to do color very well. UNLESS - have you been doing any of the coloring yourself? Because often the over-the-counter products are not strong enough to lift the color past the brassy stage in ash blondes. If you had been doing it yourself, they may not be able to repair the color by going lighter - you might have to go darker until your natural color grows out. Your hair may be too porous now - they may not be able to process it any more without seriously damaging it.

No, I have not been doing it myself...i have always gotten highlights, but then I went to a short hair cut and every month I would have to get them so we decided to just go a lighter blonde color all over instead of the highlights..when I put COLOR on it just pulls reddish tones, so she bleached my whole head out and then put a toner on..I don't understand either because my highlights always came out light blonde, could it be in the toner..which I don't understand that then either because it was an ash toner and if I was bleached out, the red tones, all tones should be gone.

That really makes no sense then. I think I would get a second opinion.

I would go and show the manager, not just call.

As a hairdresser myself, I know that not everyone has as big of problem with gold tones in the hair as others do. 2 people can both have med. ash hair but one pulls gold and the other doesnt. Bleach should take out the tones but it may be b/c of old color etc. that you may need to rebleach. It could also be the wrong color toner was applied. It doesnt sound like the hairdresser who did your hair knows alot about this. Ask to see the mgr and a senior colorist.

You need to evaluate your hair to see if it can withstand another bleaching. In the meantime, make sure you are deep conditioning your hair and babying it without too much heat styling.

I think my hair may be able to stand another bleaching because it is literally 1/2 long..she butchered me too trying to get color out. I'm so scared to do anything, but I have to do something...I think my grandma had this color..it is not for me. How do I know if it was the wrong color toner and would it help to put another toner on or should i rebleach?

Re: bleached out hair still brassy?

I would go to another salon. Was this one of those cheapo places like great clips or something?

I have naturally a dirty blonde hair and I get blond highlights and they look great at 1st but after about a month, they turn brassy too. I have tried all kinds of shampoos....nothing works. It just sucks. Anyone know any help?

Re: bleached out hair still brassy?

You need to rebleach to get out the toner and bring you lighter -breaking thru the gold. Sometimes, even medium blonde-brown hair can take a bleaching or two to get thru the gold. It all depends on your undertones, etc. Bleach loses its effectiveness after about 45 min (or so-depending on whats used). Sometimes a quik redo with a second batch gets thru the gold and brings you the light whitey blonde you want.
My freind was a dark brown with lots of red/gold and we had to bleach her 2x to get her thru the gold then we'd tone with matrix hybrids cornsilk which gave a light whitey soft blonde.
It doesnt matter where you go but who the colorist is.
As far as keeping it blonde, styling products and even water can discolor hair. Use a product designed for blonde or white hair which will counteract the discoloration.
Still, I'd talk to the mgr/senior person at the salon and express your concerns. I am sure you paid alot for the service and deserve to be happy or at least have them attempt a correction.

Re: bleached out hair still brassy?

I guess my salon was an average one..haircuts are $19 and the whole bleach mistake was $150, so it wasn't real cheap...I know my lady is good at cuts, but I guess not color..what a way to find out. She did not leave the bleach on anywhere near 45 minutes..it was about 15-20 minutes I guess. If i get bleached out to WHITE, i don't have to stay there, right? Will I be able to tone to a baby blonde kind of look? I think I will go to about 4 places today and show them this and see what they say.

Re: bleached out hair still brassy?

Bleaching timing can span a huge range. It depends on product, heat used, hair condition and if there is anything already on the hair etc. 15-20 seems too short to me if no heat was used but everyone "pulls up" different. When you rebleach you could go 10 minutes or 30. It just has to be closely watched and taken off at the right time. You can bleach out to white and then tone and have a baby blonde look you desire pretty easily I think. Some people excel at cuts others at color. Sometimes finding a specialist is well worth your trouble. Best of luck.

    Abbey-
as using all the blonde shampoos does that include shimmer lights (clairol-i think)? It is for silver hair and I found that to help counteract some brassy problems.

As I stated before, it can be anything from your water (esp . high mineral content) to your products.

If nothing works, maybe you need to go slightly lighter next time you highlight.

Try a clarifying shampoo or mixing a handful of baking soda with your regular shampoo to see if it can remove any product residue if that is the case.

Re: bleached out hair still brassy?

Where do they sell the shimmer lights? Never heard of that one but as far as mineral content in the water...I have used Jon Freida Blonde and that is supposed to take away brassiness due to mineral build up and that didn't help my hair in the least. Won't baking soda or a clarifier strip the color and highlights though? I want the baby blonde highlights with some brown mixed in....turns out great at 1st but after a month...gets dark and brassy. I pay a lot to have it done so it's a bummer. Biolage color care was ok at 1st but that too stopped working.
