Try Head & Shoulders or Selsun Blue. Dry scalp and dandruff (which are basically the same thing) can both cause an itchy scalp.

I used to have an itchy scalp, I didn't have dandruff or signs of a dry scalp. The doc said it was nerves.
I covered my head with olive oil on a weekend and let it soak in all day. Either that helped or I stopped worrying, cause it wasn't itchy anylonger. And I do still worry so...

I use Head & Shoulders Intensive Treatment (it's a very dark blue bottle) and I also pour Listerine move my head and rub it into my scalp once I am finished washing my hair. It really works!

I was prescribed Nizoral shampoo when I had a very very itchy spot on the back of my head and it was pealing a lot. Every once in a while that spot will be itchy again and I use Nizoral from the store not the prescription kind. The difference is strength. Prescription strength is 2% and over the counter is 1% of the active ingredient. It works really well though.

Here's some other possible suggestions for you, because I get the itchy head sometimes too. You could possibly have an allergy to something you are putting on your head (shampoo, gel, anything). I recently found out I am allergic to several product additives (inlcuding frangrance), so that explains my problem. Also, I have gotten this before because I did not wash my shampoo or conditioner out well enough. Just some suggestions other than the dandruff shampoo, hope you find something that works. Good luck!

If you color your hair, stay away from dyes and treatments that have metal in them. This always breaks out my scalp...Try a hot oil treatment to soothe your scalp in the meantime.

My head used to itch and break out all the time. My problem turned out to be putting on conditioner too heavily and rubbing it into my scalp. Now I just put it on the ends and no more itch!
