    White marks on fingernails.

What do the white marks in your fingernails mean? One person told me it was that I wasn't getting enough calcium. Someone else said I had just damaged the fingernail. Are either persons right?

I have always heard that those white lines mean that you have an iron deficiency. I may be wrong but I would also like to know as I have them on a few of my nails...

I always thought they were calvium deposits, but i went to a medical site and they said: White marks on nails are caused by zinc deficiency. Good sources are cheddar cheese and spinach.

so I'm assuming they are right.

I only seem to get white marks when I accidently bang my fingernail tops on something really hard. I've always called them nail bruises. <IMG SRC="http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif">

I was told by a doctor that those white spots were bruises underneath your fingernail.

    Hey booksrme-
I was wondering the same thing about my fingernails, but I asked my friend who is going to beauty school and she told me they were calcium deposits, which is why they can sometimes be softer than the rest of your nail. They're harmless and the best thing to do is take a calcium suppliment, to make sure you're getting the right amount. Calcium can't hurt you, so even if it doesn't fix the nail problem, it'll be beneficial. Good luck!!

    Re: White marks on fingernails.

White marks.. especially if they are only on one or two nails are usually due to trauma to the nail. Maybe you for instance closed your finger in the drawer 6 months ago..it hurt at the time, but by the time you see it on your nailbed, the trauma is long forgotten. If there are spots on all or most of your nails, and they are all simularly spaced from your cuticle, it could be from a fever while that section of the nail was forming. If you have powdery white circle shaped spots, it couled be a superficial yeast infection. If thaTS THE CASE, try Doctor G's clear nail.. available at some salons but it costs less if you buy it from your local beauty supply shop(like Sally's) I hope I've helped.

    Re: White marks on fingernails.

In Australia where I come from those white marks on fingernails are lucky - we count them off, starting from the thumb - "gift", "friend", "foe", "lover to meet", "journey to go" - and if you have a white mark on the equivalent nail this is what's going to happen to you! I think those white marks only really appear when you're young - nothing to worry about - you don't seem to get them as much when you're old like me!
