Apathy-Big Problem

When I started antidepressants in 95 I noticed one of the first symptoms was apathy(not caring,no motivation).I would go into work late a couple times a week, and also leave early and really not care.I was never like that before at all.
I lost job after job and it really causes me huge problems(not caring). My doctor says it is due to the depression, but that's not true. He says being on an a.d. alone causes huge attitude problems if you're not on a mood stabilizer, which seems to be very true.I know right from wrong but the mental barrier is too hard to overcome.

I was wondering if anyone else gets this attitude while on antidepressants.

Re: Apathy-Big Problem

Yes. It has been the case for over 10 years now. I don't know what to do about it
and it bothers me to the point of being the single most important issue I have.
It overwhelms me and I feel like an entire failure and that my life has been a huge waste.
I'm sorry I have no advice to offer you, only that I can commiserate with you and
where you find yourself lately. Sorry.

Re: Apathy-Big Problem

wow, I didn't know that there were others like me. I feel totally crippled by my inability to do much of anything at all. I function in some areas but I feel like I have to gather all the strength I have to get one little thing done. I have taken Zoloft and Lexapro before, but I seem to always feel like I just cant do even simple things. I feel like an utter failure which worsens my mood. This is such a problem that my husband cannot deal with my pathetic state anymore, this is a HUGE factor in my failing marriage.
I am taking Lamictal and Trileptal and I am starting Seroquel. I can never tell if the meds help at all, obviously they haven't helped solve the apathy.
My husband doesn't understand (and neither do I) why I just cant get up and function. There is no explaination for me to give to him, and I feel like I could be labled just plain lazy,to me it isn't a choice, it is a dreaded place to live in.

Re: Apathy-Big Problem

I am worried because I think just taking antidepressants for years has finally taken its toll.
I am at a crossroads.I really don't want to go down the anti seizure, anti psychotic road which is where the doctors are leading everyone.Enough is enough.I was on lamictal and seroquel for 6months and it was horribly dreadful for me.
My goal is to come off all of the meds but scared that my brain will not function properly without them and that they have done permanent damage to me.
Does anyone else feel this way,or is it just me?
