    Insomnia/Depression/Hypomania

Okay, how many of you wake up at the wee hours of the morning? Does insomnia haunt and taunt your life? Or is it a part of a depression or hypomania that is lingering among us? Which is it for you?

Do any of you take prescriptive sleeping pills for insomnia or sleep?

Questions, questions, questions...... Just pondering at your brain today!

I wake up around 4:30 in the morning of lately. Insomnia has been haunting my life and driving me literally batty, along with our cat Jack. He is a pest and my wonderful furry friend as well. It appears I will be taking the Lunesta, which I only take as needed, again due to the oncoming Insomnia again.

The Insomnia is due to a depression that has lingered into my life due to caring for my sons and other variables the pdoc told me last Friday. He recommended that our family seek out for respite care. We had respite care 2-3 times a month for a year 2 years ago, and then it stopped when I got better. Now he says I need it again, only I didn't realize I was getting that 'bad'.

    hi coffeegirl
insomnia is something ive dealt with since the age of about 13, i usually deal with it by listening to a personal cd player and trying to charge the excess energy off, which is what i feel is keeping me awake. sometimes id be up til 5am. it tends to only occur when im hypomanic, when im depressed i could sleep for days.
i know how horrible this can be, lets hope your meds help you with this

Even though I'm on lithium I still have occasional blips on the radar (which I can drag myself through more often than not), usually of the depressive variety. But either way, insomnia is usually one of the first signs that I'm heading for a fragile period. If I'm on a bit of a low, I find that my body feels like lead but I just toss and turn around in bed unable to get to sleep. If my mood is on the way up, it's the racing thoughts that keep me awake and I usually feel as fresh as a daisy.

    Re: Insomnia/Depression/Hypomania

I'm 23, and have had sleeping problems since about age 12 or 13. I often tell people i haven't had a good nights sleep in 10 years...

I have no idea what causes it, but since it happens all the time, i think it may be seperate from my bipolar issues. My family doc finally recommended I see a sleep specialist because of my insomnia and possible narcolepsy (he thinks i show signs of it).

I think that maybe i do have another problem other than insomnia, because even if i do sleep at night, I feel as though I haven't slept at all. It's very strange. I feel fatigued all the time, whether i'm manic or depressed (my mania usually takes the form of anxiety rather than energy anyway).

I'm seeing the sleep doc on Aug 30, so hopefully I will find out what's wrong with me! I've taken ambien and Rozerem and neither worked for me. I've also tried a lot of antidepressants/psychiatric meds that are supposed to help with sleep.

    Re: Insomnia/Depression/Hypomania

I have had trouble sleeping since I was born. Growing up we lived in a haunted house so night time was hard for me. I knew they would come (ghosts) and terrorize me. Not to mention the traumatic experiences of school then. After that rarely did I get on a schedule where I actually slept through the night or went to sleep at a reasonable hour. As I got older it has only gotten worse for me. The sleep meds work in the hospital but once home they lose the ability to do so. I don't know why that is.
