Lithium level - How long before stable ?

I've been on lithium since June and it seems to be the wonder drug for me. At least for the time being.

The issue I am having though is that I am still on fortnightly blood tests and GP keeps changing dose so that I fluctuate between 600mg and 800mg.

I don't understand why I'm not trying 700mg but there must be a reason.

Has anyone else experienced this, is it 'normal' ?

Re: Lithium level - How long before stable ?

I and a few others have taken lithium for many years. The brand I've
always taken comes in 300mg tablets which I take 900mg morning and 900mg evening. You doctor may not beabel to dispense 700Mg becasue it does come in that dosage. When I do my blood draws my doctor always has me come in as close to 12hr after I took my last dose. That way each test is always true to each other. Everyone level is different a persons weight and metabolizism can be 2 factors that affect the doseage. Hope this helps, glad your doing well. K

Re: Lithium level - How long before stable ?

Point of information on serium Lithium blood tests : Maintenance studies are subdivided in trials with low (i. e. below 0.6 mEq/l),medium (i. e. 0.6 to 0.8 mEq/l) and high (i. e. above 0.8 mEq/l) lithium serum levels. Percentage of depressive vs. (hypo-)manic or mixed recurrences are compared for these three groups. The percentage of depressive recurrences in the groups with low, medium and high lithium levels differed acording to dosage. The results might indicate that low lithium levels are effective in preventing depression whereas higher blood levels are needed to prevent (hypo-)manic or mixed states.

Your pdoc will need to watch the serium Lithium carefully for your own stability.
