    Depo-provera and ovulation

This may sound like a stupid question but if you have had the depo inj (last 1 was march) do you have to have a period to ovulate and concieve or could you be pregnant without having had a period (hope im not confusing anyone).

The thing is i have been on the dreaded depo since sept 1998 my last shot was march 2004 and we are ttc but im not sure if i would have to wait to have a period to concieve or not.

Please, if anyone has any usefull information or own experience can you help me,

    Thanx, sammie p

you can concieve before your next period, but if your periods are regular, it's easier to tell when you are ovulating...there are ways to check though, talk to your gyn or gp about those thermometers and different tests to tell.

No you don't need a period. You could ovulate first. If you do (and don't get pregnant), you'll get your period about 2 weeks later.
But what could also happen, especially coming off depo, is you'll have some anovulatory bleeding while your body is trying to ovulate. Basically the lining builds up until either it can't sustain itself and sheds, or while its building up and you're trying to ovulate there is a sudden drop in estrogen that triggers a bleed.
But a true period can only come after ovulation.

    Re: Depo-provera and ovulation

I went on Depo after the birth of a child and was on it for 2 years and I too didn't get any periods while on it. I have been off of the shot now for 8 years and it took me 2 years to conceive my son. I eventually had to see a specialist to have help conceiving and I did after 4 rounds of Clomid. Also, my periods are still not normal (after 8 years)........and my doctor said that they never will be because I mysteriously developed PCOS after being on Depo.

Thanx for that info, im not sure when they will return but i have puchased some 'vitex' to see if this may help. The doctors will see me mid 2006 if i still have not concieved but that seems like such a long time!
