Yasmin, good or bad? Should it be discontinued?

As some of you probably know from a previous post I am debating whether or not to continue Yasmin.

I was put on Yasmin 3 years ago to help with my irregular periods and SEVERE cramps (I have also had an ovarian cyst). Although Yasmin seemed to okay for the first 6-8 months, I began experiencing some problems (such as migraines, some nausea, breast tenderness, vaginal dryness, etc). However, at that time I never correlated my problems to Yasmin. As the years progressed, I began accumulating more health problems, but because I started a new job, the doctors were quick to blame the stress of my new job as the root of all of my problems. This past year, however, my health has gotten substantially worse. I had been having problems in so many different areas that I have been referred to numerous specialists (specialty GYNs, dermatologists, gastroenterologists, urologists, etc.). However, when I would ask whether or not Yasmin could be causing some/all of my problems, they look at me like I am a crazy and AGAIN attribute all of my problems to stress.

However, I spoke with an OB/GYN nurse today and she told me that "off the record" I should discontinue Yasmin. She told me that may girls who are taking Yasmin (especially those who are on for a year or more) have been coming in complaining of the same symptoms- many of the symptoms I have. She says she usually talks women out of taking Yasmin. When I asked her why the doctors are still prescribing Yasmin knowing that all of these problems exist, she told me it was because it is the cheapest BCP provided at my particular HMO (meaning that it saves the HMO money and the doctors are encouraged to push this drug).

So I thought that I would pose this question to you ladies out there who actually take the pill and can tell me what effect (if any) it has had on you.
How has Yasmin worked for you- especially those who have been on for a long time?

Again, I cannot say for sure that all of my health problems can solely be attributed to Yasmin, but these are the health problems I am currently having which I believe MAY be linked to Yasmin:

-Severe stomach problems (abdominal cramping, alternating bouts if diarrhea and constipation)
-Urinary problems (urgency, frequency, spasms, pain- however, no evidence of infection)
    -Pain during intercourse
    -Vaginal dryness
    -Anxiety/panic attacks
    -Depression/mood swings
    -Hair loss
    -Muscle pain/tension headaches
    -Blurred vision

I must also point out that there have been some benefits of Yasmin and they are:
    -regular periods
    -improved acne
    -lighter periods
-less severe cramps (although I still have cramps)

I know that every woman is different and that some pills have different effects on different women, but I am just wondering if there are some commonalities out there in regards to Yasmin. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!!!

Hi Kay--well I don't know about it being discontinued or not, if it shoudl be, and I've been on it for a year and a half almost. I too feel like a lot of my other health issues have gotten much worse w/ yasmin. My "IBS" got way worse than ever, I've had more sinus infections on Yasmin than before, and before Yasmin I was on Alesse for 2 year and the only problem I had on that was that I blew up to 30 lbs larger despite much diet and exercise--a strict 1200 cal a day diet and still no results. I found it odd, too looking back how my dr. when all I did was complain a bit about weight instead of give me a fluid pill, he puts me on Yasmin--tells me it's this miracle pill. Now, I don't even have insurance so I don't see how any HMO would save him money...but anyway he seemed VERY enthusiastic to tell me yasmin was the answer for me...and now a year and a half later I am in worse shape than I was!!! Instead of saying well let's try yet another pill (which I finally got him to agree to do I just have not filled it yet b/c I'm too scared to just try something else), he gives me a fluid pill for weight gain which in his words "should never happen on any birth control pill".....he insists that yasmin will solve all my health problems which I find quite odd since he was quick to switch me off of Alesse, another "good pill" according to him....I am not trusting him nearly as much as I used to. If my husband gets a good job within the next 6 months (he is about to graduate law school) I just may quit the pill altogether and risk pregnancy b/c a baby is better than being overweight, with hot flashes, upset stomach/D and C (IBS) problems (like you I alternate between the D and C), and tingling/numbness in my fingers and toes. I told him about that scary symtpom, but my Dr said no one has "ever" exhibited that as a symptom of birth control...he also acted like he didn't believe me when I said well that symptom is in my pamphlet of side effects to watch out for in the yasmin was odd b/c usually he is a very good DR and very thorough and answers all your ?'s....yet with this yasmin stuff he acts like I'm stepping on God's toes by suggesting it isn't the Wonder Pill he made it out to be!

Go to your OB/Gyn (or call) and tell them you want to report an adverse event to the FDA regarding Yasmin (they have to do this). This is how Vioxx went off the market because people reported the side effects to the FDA. The nurse was correct - you should be off Yasmin. The symptoms that you described that I know are definitely related to Yasmin are:

    Urinary Problems
    Pain during intercourse
    Vaginal dryness
    Anxiety/Panic attacks
    Depression/Mood swings
    Hair loss
(also low libido is a common one, too)

As for your other side effects, I'm not sure. But I do know the above symptoms you described ARE DEFINITELY RELATED TO YASMIN. Yasmin is on the Best Pills, Worst Pills. Get off Yasmin!

Re: Yasmin, good or bad? Should it be discontinued?

Thanks for asking. Not doing too well actually. I had to see a stomach specialist about 9 days ago to have a colonoscopy and EGD due to the severe stomach problems I have been having for the last year and a half. Everyone kept asking me "Why are you having this're so young." I am 26 years old. I have always thought I was having stomach problems because of my job, but now I am wondering if it was because of Yasmin.

    Anyway, I got my results:
    Mild inflammation of the dudoenum;
Hyperplastic polyp on the antral; and
    Terminal Ileum Lymphoid Hyperplasia..

The doctor says none of these are serious and all of the biopsies indicated NO CANCER!

However, since the procedures, I have felt horrible. I have had muscle pain from my neck all the way down to calves. And I continue to have chronic diarrhea after meals or even drinks. I have also had this strange pain near my left rib and radiating pain in my middle back (especially with hunger pains in the morning).

I could not tolerate this pain anymore, so last Sunday I went to the ER. I was there for 5 hours and was put on IVs and had several tests done (i.e. blood work, Xrays, CT scan, and urine tests). For the CT scan I had to drink this liquid which made my stomach pain and diarrhea 10 times worse. 5 hours later, everything came back normal. The ER doctor thinks I may have been dehydrated and possibly that my insides are in pain due to the procedure (possibly due to the "banging around" of my colon, intestines, etc.).

Since I have been having all of these tests, I am completely paranoid. I think I have every disease known to man. I have muscle aches all the time, rapid heart rate and swollen lymph nodes (some of which I have had for a while). I am not sure if this is just the anxiety taking over (from the Yasmin). I stopped Yasmin 2 weeks ago, so I am not sure what is causing what. But certain things have gotten better since I have stopped Yasmin. My blood pressure is lower and my sex drive is better. Now, I am just waiting (and scared) for the acne and menstrual cramps to come back!!!

Anyway, today I got tested for Hpylori to ensure that it is not the cause of my small instestine inflammation. I also got checked for an autoimmune disease- just as a rule out- also due to the stomach inflammation, muscle aches and swollen lymph nodes (actually this and cancer are what I am most concerned about).

Well, this is how I am doing. Bet you wish you never asked now...huh?! But thanks for asking...

Re: Yasmin, good or bad? Should it be discontinued?

    Hello everyone,

I just joined this site today, after doing some research on whether Yasmine was the culprit for all the abdominal cramps I've been experiencing, along with nausea, dizziness, frequent fatigue, breast tenderness, some depression, and headaches.

I went on Yasmine to decrease the amount of pain I was having during my PMS week. It took 3-4 months to get used to, and then I had relatively no pain for 2-3 months after that. But then my cramps came back last month. I have not had my period for 2 weeks and PMS cramps are still persistent. After reading your thread, Kay, I am really anxious to try another pill.

I had a lot of cramp pain with ortho tri cyclen lo, but not like this.

I also suggest that some of you who have doctors that will not listen to you, especially MALE doctors (I have a long list of horrible experiences with male OB-GYN's), should look into seeing another doctor until you get one that takes what you have to say seriously. No one knows you better than you. If you have concerns, don't let a doctor toss you to the side like salad. Too many people are dying in this nation everyday for taking what their doctors say 100% of the time, instead of listening to their bodies and minds.

Re: Yasmin, good or bad? Should it be discontinued?

Please, please report the adverse events to the FDA even though it may seem totally unrelated to Yasmin. The progestin in Yasmin is new and who knows what negative effect it could have on people.

Vioxx was on the market a long time before it was removed. How did it get removed? People reported negative effects to the FDA. When several different people from around the country are reporting the same thing, that's when the FDA will take a look at it. Until then, thousands of women suffer....
