    Re: Depo Shot? Any Info?

Michelle, you really should have researched the shot before you went ahead and did it. You say you don't know anything about it, that's really, really bad. Why would you consent to putting a sythetic chemical into your body that you know nothing about? That's being reckless and irresponsible with your health, and you should know that the depo shot has a host of serious side effects that you should have known about before taking it.

The most serious side effect is loss of bone density. Women who take the shot at all start to lose bone mass and once they quit, it cannot be recovered. Osteoporosis is a very serious disease, and it happens a lot more frequently to women who have been on the depo shot.

The other side effects that women have had on the shot include severe weight gain of 30 pounds or more, non-stop bleeding that goes on for the entire 3 months after getting the shot, serious hair loss, acne break outs, and a lot of other things.

Over all, the patch and the shot are the 2 most dangerous birth control options available, which is why a large number of doctors will refuse to presribe them to their patients any longer. They have grown wise to the fact that the problems faced by women on these forms of birth control far outweigh anything else.

You should also pick up a book called "The Blessings of the Curse" by Susan Rako, MD. It explains everything about the depo shot in detail, and why it is so seriously bad for women to skip their period while on it. She spent many years doing intensive research on how depo affects women who are on it, and the results are not good.

I would have never gone in to get the shot without fully researching it first. But hopefully you will take the time to do that now, although it's too late for you now, at least for the next 3 months. But you should seriously consider not going back for the next shot.

    Re: Depo Shot? Any Info?

    Thanks for your reply

Well the dr told me all that you just said. so YES i was aware and i wasnt reckless.

The most reckless thing i COULD of done was research the internet about it.

The internet is the worse place to research things like this because there are so many bad and negative things that may or may not be true.

how do you think so many people think they have diseases? because they research way to much.

When i talked to the dr she told me about bone loss and she does free bone density testing to make sure all her patients are ok.

Along with depo is also the chance of weight LOSS and not everyone has it. i kinda looked after leaving this thread and it said the most weight gain is 5 lb and it is more common in people that are already "overweight"

i had a HORRIBLE expirience on ortho lo. i will never take that again.

the dr said to try for the 3 months and if i dont like it then i can always stop. my problem with pills is headaches. im a daily headache sufferer that now have under control and i was not about to get on something that would add to them and make them start up again.

Hair loss is a side effect to a few Birth control. on ortho i noticed it. The bleeding i understand about. some patients have normal (but lighter) periods and most have none at all. and others "Spot"
my intentions on asking on this board was to speak with other people that actually took it and what their expiriences were.

Thanks for your reply though. are you on BC? if so what kind? must be a good one. id like to know so i can inquire about it now that you have me worried.

    Talk soon

    Re: Depo Shot? Any Info?

I unfortunately took the pill for 14 years. I originally went on for help with really bad cramps and very heavy bleeding. I practically tried every brand available, all of them did nothing to help me.

I started researching the negative effects of hormonal birth control back in April of this year. After my research, I concluded that all methods of hormonal birth control are really unhealthy, and that women should not be using these synthetic chemicals for contraception. This lead to me quitting the pill finally, for good, on July 1st of this year.

I am currently practicing FAM and using condoms with my boyfriend. It is working out really well. I'm also trying to save up enough money to purchase the LadyComp which is a great device to measure fertility and to know when it's safe to have sex. It's designed to indicate fertile days with a red light on the device. I'm really excited about it and looking forward to getting it once I can get the money together.

The point is that, at least for birth control purposes, there are a lot of other non-hormonal methods out there that won't screw with your body the way the pill, the patch, the shot, the IUD and the ring do. I got so sick and tired of my side effects, I finally decided I should quit. And I did. I'm really glad I did because I have been feeling a lot better each day.

    Re: Depo Shot? Any Info?

I have to agree with Bracelet when she says that Depo is one of the worst forms of birth control out there.

I was on Depo for 2 years. I began Depo after the birth of my 1st child. I was horrible with taking pills (because I'd forget) and my luck I'd end up pregnant, so I decided on the shot since I only had to think about it 4 times a year. Now, mind you I was not overweight at the time. Within the first 6 months of using Depo, I gained almost 50 pounds!!! My periods were completely absent for the entire time I was on the shot. I began experiencing other things when on it and didn't put two and two together til years later because my doctor (the one that prescribed it) kept telling me that it couldn't be from the Depo. It took a specialist at Mayo Clinic (very reputable healthcare facility) to tell me that all of my symptoms pointed to PCOS and that he has seen numerous patients mysteriously develop PCOS after using Depo.

Anyway.........I got off of Depo 2 years after I started because my husband and I wanted another baby. My doc told me that my period would return within 6 months or so. 6 months come.......no period, so I thought well maybe I ovulated and conceived right away, so I took a test.....negative. Month after month, I went through this hoping that the reason why my period didn't return was because I got pregnant. Finally a year and a half after stopping the shot, I went to an infertility specialist for help. I was immediately started on Clomid to induce my ovulation, which worked. I was on Clomid for 4 months, and got a period each month while on it, and finally got pregnant (2 years after stopping Depo). After the birth of my 2nd child.....back to the same routine. No period. This went on for years. Finally, 5 years after my last Depo injection, I got my 1st period (with the exception of the 4 months on Clomid). I have now been off of Depo for almost 10 years.............and my periods did not start regulating until October of 2005 (9 years after stopping Depo). So far this year, I have gotten my period every month, which is the first time that has happened since I got pregnant with my 1st child (who is now 12 years old).

Infertility was not my only battle since Depo. I've since been diagnosed wtih PCOS (which I already mentioned) and Type 2 Diabetes. I've also got a host of other health issues too, which were non-existant prior to using Depo.

Also, I disagree when you say that the worst thing you could have done was research the internet before using Depo. You're doctor only gave you the basic info that is given to everyone else. They don't tell you of the horror stories that people bring to them after having the shot. Doctors have a responsibility to their patients, but their job is to also sell prods for the pharmceutical companys. If a doc administers this drug and you are a candidate (and most everyone is).......they would never steer you away from it!!! If I knew then (in 1994 when i started Depo), what I know now.......I never would have been on that drug. But, it was fairly new at that time........the info that is available now wasn't available then. The experiences people have while on drugs determines whether or not a drug is safe!!! So, researching would have been the best thing to do. That is the only way the FDA gets their info and determines whether a drug should be on the market or not. It's already got 1 black box warning........another one and it'll most likely be gone.

IMO........when people start these drugs after they admit they've been informed of the risks/danger of using these drugs........they are being irresponsible. Your mistake is that your trusted your doctor (and I did to....and look where it got me). You didn't hear the horror stories. Depo has a black box warning with the FDA.......that should be enough to raise flags for people to stay away from it. Osteoporosis is nothing to mess with.

I'm not trying to be mean......that is not my intention AT ALL!!! I'm just trying to help you become aware of just how dangerous this drug can be. You may not have a bad experience with it, but keep in mind that it can happen to you. If you notice anything..............do yourself a favor and stop using it. Report your findings to your doctor and to the FDA. If you have a positive experience, then that is wonderful. Just be careful not to use it for an extended amount of time because of the risk of osteoporosis. Also, be sure to take your doctor up on her offer of a free bone density test, cause the minute you begin using it, it can have an effect on your bones. Just please be careful. I wish you the best of luck.

    Re: Depo Shot? Any Info?

    WOW

Thanks so much for the reply.I think i may not get another one. I was considering the IUD my b/f has been "talking" about a vasectomy. and thats probably whats gonna happen. I took a pill years ago and i dont know the nameof it but it was GREAT and i wish i could get that again. Now im regretting getting it because theres nothingi can do until november. Nothing will happen to me until then will it?

i told the dr that i was already on a migrain medicine that "could" cause weight gain and i was concerned about this shot causing it. She told me to eat right and exercise. which while being on the LYRICA (migraine med) i did gain almost 10 pounds. i didnt even know until i got weighed at drs office a week ago and since then i have lost 1 1/2 pounds out of the 10 i gained. I dont plan on being on BC for no more then a year. My boyfriend can go and get the surgery. But now i worry because i already did it. i think i ll call my old gyno i had for about 15 years. i should of talked to him first. he delivered my two children and has been delivering for 50 years and recently retired.

    thanks ill keep posted

    Re: Depo Shot? Any Info?

Ok just spoke with old gyno. they said as long as im not on it for more than 2 years than ill be fin. i told them i dont plan on being on an BC for very long anyways.

About the weight gain she said yes it is a side effect but as long as i eat right and excerise than i should be ok.

She told me it sounds like this dr gave me the new type. i dont know what she meant because i told her the dr gave me the shot in my stomach and she said it sounds like i got the new one. unless depo is also give in stomach. i dont know but i feel a bit better with talking to my old drs. i guess i have to wait it out after three months and see how i feel.

Ortho LO was horrible for me. i will never take that again. Oh and what i said about researching the internet for info. i personally cannot do that. i was on topamax ( severe side effect of anxiety and i didnt know it) and started researching the internet because i didnt feel right and i thougth i had every disease in the world and i went through heck for 2 months until my dr realized what the topamax was doing to me. im on something new now and have been for 2 months and so far no side effects from it. So maybe ill be lucky with this shot and also have hardly any problems. since i did it yesterday wouldnt i start to notice things now?

    Thanks

    Re: Depo Shot? Any Info?

When I was on Depo, I actually liked it.......which explains why I was on it for 2 years! I enjoyed not having a period......who wouldn't. It wasn't until years later that I found out how unsafe it is to stop what normally occurs naturally (meaning your period). Like I said before, the problems that started occurring while I was on Depo.....I brushed off because I believed my doctor when he told me that they were not related to my using Depo. So, just be aware of your body. You could stay on it and see how things go. Sometimes people don't have problems at all. Others.....their problems appear after the 1st injection....others after multiple injections. My friend started losing her hair (literally in chunks) after using it for about 6 months. So, it can begin at anytime.........I would say most likely you'd notice problems within the first 6 months. If you stay on it, just please pay attention to your body. Ask your doc a million questions if you need to. For some people, 1 shot wreaks havoc on their bodys.....and you are right when you say that there is nothing you can do about it now. Whats done is done.

Oh and so you know..............after my birth control nightmare.........I don't use anything at all!!! I'd rather risk pregnancy!!! Not that I recommend that to anyone.........my experience just scared me so much that I won't risk further damage to my body.

    I wish you the best.

    Re: Depo Shot? Any Info?

I'm on depo. It's isnt good long term. I don't have any more options in regards to bc because i have ovarian cysts and bc is suppsoed to stop it. I dont tihnk the depo did, but ive only been on it 4 months after my surgery.

The first three months were horrible. I had hotflashes all the time and hated it.

If you take depo make sure you are getting your calcium intake and you will be fine. If you are younger you still have ways of increasing your bonedensity after you go off your shot.

My doctor does not recomend depo for more then 2 years.

I love it. no periods, no cramps, some breakouts, but no problems yet.

With any bc you need to be aware of your body and your pains. Its tough to decide based on other people's opinons after all if one worked for everyone - there wouldnt be so many out there!

    Good luck!

    Re: Depo Shot? Any Info?

Ok so i have been on Depo for 8 days now.

ive heard good stuff and bad stuff. Now i know im not gonna be on this long term.

The weight gain side effect i was concerned about but i read where basically you only gain weight because this shot increases your appetite.

Im already on another medication that made me gain 10 pounds in less than 2 months which i am now controlling and so far as of a week ago i almost lost 2 pounds of that.

So now im really watching what i eat. Being on 2 meds that cause weight gain! I would eat a huge dinner until i was stuffed full and then i craved something sweet although i was already full from dinner.

Now i eat a light lunch and at dinner i eat a salad. I gotten away from sweets and potato chips.

Now what im wondering is. When is it ok to have sex? im still worried and i think i will be for awhile. I used to be ortho lo and i was on that for 5 months and i was so scared to have sex due to becoming pregnant,

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks

    Re: Depo Shot? Any Info?

I was on Depo for like five years. I knew when we wanted to try to have kids, so two years before, I switched to the patch. Three months before TTC, I went off the patch and hubby and I used condoms. We got pregnant our second month of trying.

Yes, I did experience some weight gain while on Depo, but I was also going to college and then got married, both of which can make you gain weight as well. I made sure that I took a calcium supplement daily and did weight-bearing exercise to keep my bone density up. I'm fine now.

So, it might be horrible for you, it might not. YMMV.

    Hi,

You are protected for birth control the day you get your shot. When you get closer to your next shot you will have to consider either to stay on it or choose something else.
