Re: 8 Years of Depo...what to expect when i stop??
Well, I don't have a good answer....but thought I'd share my experience. I was on Depo for 2 years. I started it after having my 1st child. I had no problems before using Depo. I did gain about 50 pounds within the first 6 months, unlike you. I did not get a single period the entire time I was on it, which I thought was fantastic. I stopped Depo to try for another child. I was told to expect my period to return within 6 to 12 months. Well, mine didn't return until almost 5 years after my last injection! I was able to conceive during that time (2 years after stopping) thanks to fertility treatments. My period did not become regular until 9 years and 1 month after my last injection!!! From year 5 to year 9....I only had a few period each year. So, it was messed up. Since then, my periods have been like clockwork, and I was able to conceive again (on my own...when not even trying) last summer and had my 3rd child in February of this year.
My periods are different than they were prior to Depo....but I'm not sure if that is because of Depo or since having children. My periods don't last as many days (they typically lasted about 7 or 8 days prior to Depo and now last 5 to 6). I also don't get massive cramps like I did prior to Depo either. I have heard many people say that their periods changed after having children. Well, I only had 1 period after having my first child before I started Depo, so I'm not sure if my periods are different since using Depo, or since having children.
If I were you, I would give it a year for your period to return. If it returns, but is not regular, see a specialist.....a reproductive endocrinologist would be my advice. If it doesn't return, same thing....see that specialist. Hopefully yours will return in no time, but if not....act on it and get the help you need to get your hormones back in check.
Best wishes to you.
