If you have a pretty regular cycle, assuming a 30 day cycle, any day apart from those around ovulation (9th to 18th) are days when u have less chance of getting pregnant.

If you want to be extra careful, the best time is the first day or two after you finish your period. If your cycle is predictable, the day or two before your start your period is the next best time. If your cycle is not predictable, I wouldn't recommend the second option because you may not ovulate at the same time every month and you never really know if you're done ovulating or not. The day after your period is the safest.

It's a very unreliable method of birth control. Just use condoms! They're cheap and easy to use and don't cause side effects!

To know when the "safe" days are, you'd have to know when you ovulate. Guessing doesn't really work, because different women may ovulate at somewhat different times in their cycles, and the same woman might ovulate on different days in different cycles.

If you really want to know when you ovulate, you can track your cycles. If you wake up at the same time every morning, take your temperature with a basal thermometer (the only kind of thermometer accurate enough for this purpose), and records each day's temperatures, you'll notice a spike and then a drop that signal ovulation. If you also check your cervical mucus every day, it changes in consistency through the cycle, and is thickest during ovulation. There's a book, Taking Charge of Your Fertility, by Toni Weschler, that explains all this in much greater detail.

It takes several cycles to reliably know when you ovulate. While you're learning, and on days when there's any question of safety, you must use condoms. If you're checking your cervical mucus, it can only be condoms. Spermicide or semen in the vagina masks the cervical mucus, so it would make that part of the cycle tracking unreliable. And it takes even longer to know when your safe days are after your period and before ovulation. At first, you'll only be able to go without condoms when you know you've already ovulated.

There are software programs that help keep track of this, too.

If you're not sexually active and just asking this question to know, you can start learning your cycles now, when there's no need for protection. That way, if and when you become sexually active, you will know.

Keep in mind, too, that cycle tracking doesn't work if you're on any birth control. It suppresses your cycle and makes the ovulation signs unreliable. And if you've recently stopped birth control, it may take a while for your ovulation signs to become reliable. If you're on birth control and staying on it, any day is safe.
