Question Possible effectiveness decrease with fioricet

I've been on Ocella (the generic for Yasmin) birth control for 5 years. This past week I was prescribed fioricet to take as needed for migraines. I haven't taken it yet. I see in the side effects/ drug interactions that it can decrease the effectiveness of some birth controls. I'm curious to know if Ocella is one of these. I also want to know how long fioricet stays in the system if it does effect my birth control. I'm not yet ready to have kids but am also nit a fan if condoms so I'd like to know if I'm going to have to use them in addition to the ocella at times I take the fioricet. Does anyone know or can anyone direct me to someone who might?

Re: Possible effectiveness decrease with fioricet

Fioricet has three different medications in it; butalbital, acetaminophen, and caffeine. From what I've found the butalbital in Fioricet can severely interfere with the ethinyl estradiol, or estrogen in Ocella and may cause contraceptive failure. Fioricet can stay in your system for up to a week, or two depending on how much you consume in a week. If you only take one pill a week it should be out of your system in 4-5 days. With it's interaction with your birth control I would recommend using a back-up method like the sponge or spermicide if you hate condoms for at least a week after taking a Fioricet. If you are going to have to take Fioricet long term you might want to try a progestin only pill, or mini pill. You wouldn't have to worry about a back-up method because they contain no estrogen.

Hope this helps. Best of luck to you!!
